"No longer what it once was, very disappointing…"

2.0

I hesitated writing this review, but it’s been on my mind since we’ve returned home and felt like I needed to do so. We have stayed at BGI at least five or six times over the last decade - also staying at Allegria on several occasions, which i would recommend. Suffice it to say, sadly we will never stay at BGI again. We have been twice since Guy Pacurar sold the inn to pursue Fathers+Daughtes Cellars (which is producing fabulous wines) bringing friends with us both times. It was concerning the first time (when the new owner had just taken over) and that concern has been confirmed many times over with our recent stay. They are sending promotions that offered some savings on multi night stays so we were tempted to give it another try. But… Food, service and general “feel” of the inn has degenerated so much - not remotely what anyone would expect at an expensive, “luxury” inn. It was embarrassing to us because we’d brought our friends with such high expectations. Mendocino is wonderful! In fact, it might be our very favorite place to spend time. Next time we’ll stay at McCollum House or Allegria. Sadly, BGI has become a shadow of its former self and, until it’s sold again - hopefully, to a hands-on owner who cares - I wouldn’t even consider it.

"Good"

5.0

The stay was overall very pleasant. The landscape is truly beautiful — the ocean view, boats, and surrounding nature create a stunning setting. The house, although older, is extremely well maintained and very comfortable. The common area for breakfast or dinner is also excellent, with a gorgeous view that really enhances the experience. Breakfast was very good and exceeded expectations. However, the dinner experience was disappointing. We were aware it would be a simple meal, but it was significantly more basic than expected, and the quality and flavor did not stand out. The available beverages were also quite limited, mostly simple beers from Fort Bragg. Considering the price, the overall offering feels somewhat limited, especially when it comes to dinner and beverage options.

Considering the price, I don’t believe this property offers good value for money. While there are positive aspects, the overall experience does not justify the cost. They would certainly need to reconsider their pricing to make the stay feel worthwhile.

"Disappointed with my last stay."

4.0

Stayed last weekend at the Inn and have been a regular guest for several years. Prior visits were always exceptional (5+ stars). Our last trip, early last year, we had learned that the Inn had been purchased by a corporation and could tell that some things had already changed, but we would return to see if things got any better. This visit we had issues/concerns with our room. There was hardly any water pressure from the shower head and pillows were flat and clumpy. Also, on this visit the food was not as good as it once was as we were told that there was a new chef. They used to put a menu out for the next 2-3 days, but this go around it wasn't released until mid-afternoon. The food was horrible and very disappointing. They also changed the breakfast menu, which was also very disappointing. This place was not the same. All the charm and little things that they used to do are no longer. Pastries used to be put out daily, not any more. Coffee mugs in the morning were sparse, had to ask for a coffee mug, then told it would be a few minutes as they were being washed....staff should know how many guests are staying and plan accordingly. I don't pay over $600 a night to then have to drink coffee out of a paper cup then next morning. If I wanted to do that, I would go to Starbucks!!! My wife and I have visited this Inn over a dozen times and never have we visited with anyone who brought young kids. Well, Valentine's Day get-away, our room was right next to a couple that brought their noisy 5 year old and unfortunately, the room walls are paper thin and could hear pretty much everything. Then during breakfast, dinner/happy hour, their noisy rambunctious kid just made this stay that much more enjoyable, not! VERY DISAPPOINTED and not sure if I'll return. Paid a lot of money for lack of what used to make this place special.

"Disappointing for the price"

4.0

Looked amazing on web site, but overall disappointing and over priced. Walls are paper thin as described by other guests. Food and wine is average (breakfast) to poor (dinner ). Front desk service was excellent. The room, was nice, but light bulbs flickered with dimmer, and water pressure was really poor. Worth 1/2 the price we paid. Won’t stay again.

"Horrible Service"

2.0

DO NOT STAY HERE. While the view from the inn is beautiful, the service is horrible, the walls are paper-thin and the rooms are mediocre. Specifically, Crystal at the front desk is one of the worst service people I’ve ever encountered. When I left the key at the front desk to checkout, Crystal said, “Did you request a late checkout.” Since it was noon and no one told us that checkout was at 11 am, I told Crystal that I didn’t know what she was talking about. She rudely responded that she was going to charge us a $100 late checkout fee. I told her not to do so. The late checkout fee was ridiculous because the inn was not fully occupied. An hour after leaving the inn, I received an email with the final invoice showing the $100 late fee. I highly recommend visiting Mendocino, but stay anywhere but the Brewery Gulch Inn.

"Service needs improvements and overcharged"

4.0

Stayed one night in a suite room. Based on the very high online ratings, we expected a high-quality stay and attentive service. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We arrived around 6:00 p.m. when it was already dark. Upon entering the lobby, we saw a group of people dining, but no one acknowledged or welcomed us. After waiting for a while, I had to ask how to check in. A staff member came from the dining area to assist and informed us of a 5% gratuity charge for food service. The check-in staff member later appeared and helped with luggage only after we requested assistance. We were given two bento boxes, but no one helped deliver them to our room. The food was cold, and there was no assistance with drinks—everything had to be handled by ourselves. Breakfast the next morning was better in terms of food quality. Someone helped us place our order, but we still needed to refill drinks on our own. At checkout, we received only a brief “thank you,” with no further interaction. Overall, we did not feel welcomed during our stay. The room and the property itself were cozy and warm, but the service needs significant improvement. Given the price, the stay felt heavily overcharged for the level of service provided.
