"Very Good"

Location was excellent. The view from our room and the back deck was wonderful.

The inn should consider not letting young children stay at the hotel. It doesn't make for a relaxing, romantic, or quiet stay. Food was okay.

"Work needed to bring BGI back to 5+ stars"

6.0

Stayed last weekend at the Inn. Have been a regular guest for several years. Prior visits were always exceptional (5+ stars). This visit had issues/concerns with staff and room. Also, on this visit the food was not as good and there were some other issues. This place was not the same. I emailed Isabel (guest service manager) with detailed list of concerns and why the stay was not worth the price. Isabel sent a detailed response that seemed appropriate and areas they will be working on to bring the BGI back to a higher standard. I appreciated her sincere response. I hope this happens as this has always been such a special place to stay. I will give the BGI second chance down the road.

"Avoid this place"

2.0

Wildly overpriced and overrated. I am honestly shocked by the number of 4 and 5 star reviews and accolades for this property. Perhaps it was once great but no more. Room was outdated and in disrepair. Fireplace thermostat fell off repeatedly, and the fireplace itself was off-gassing. Walls are paper thin and you can hear everything in the rooms around and above you. Bed and pillows were cheap and uncomfortable. No fridge in room to keep water or beverages cold. Service and staff attitude was indifferent at best. Ran out of coffee on our second morning with no cups available (“they are being washed”) at 915AM. Included breakfast was OK. The much advertised evening appetizer and wine hour was well below expectations. We did enjoy an excellent massage. We will not be coming back.

"Our stay was very disappointing."

2.0

Our stay was very disappointing. Even though our booking was prepaid, we were charged again at check-in, and the staff repeatedly told us to contact Expedia instead of resolving the issue themselves. The matter was only addressed by them and they reached out to refund me after we returned home, which was extremely frustrating. Additionally, our 4:30 pm spa appointment was cancelled without proper notice, we were celebrating my partner’s birthday, but unfortunately, the experience was ruined. Another dissapointment was that my dietary request to avoid red meat was completely ignored when dinner was served. The only positive was the gentleman at the bar during wine hour, who genuinely understood guest service. Overall, this is not the kind of experience you would expect for a special occasion, and future guests should be aware of these issues. Rooms: The rooms are poorly equipped, they don’t even have a fridge in the room . The windows don’t close properly in the evenings, the restroom blinds are in need of maintenance, and the shower is leaking. Food & drinks: The property does not offer any in-house services beyond the morning breakfast and early evening meal. If you get hungry around 8:30 PM, I would recommend keeping some snacks on hand, though note that the rooms do not have a mini fridge Noteworthy details: The staff here clearly need better training. The next day, we visited Harbor House Inn, and the service was impeccable in comparison. The Brewery Gulch Inn staff seem completely unaware of how a hospitality business should operate

"Nice getaway"

8.0

Staff was very nice and several very informative. Cleanliness a plus. The small meals were tasty (small entree with desert for dinner, and a "menu" option for breakfast). We appreciated not having to drive into town for dinner. Location was good. The massages they coordinated were excellent. The view was nice, Booking online I wasn't sure how the views worked. Generally, you are way above the ocean. The view from this location is of a bay - and then further out the ocean. In the future, I would call the location to clarify if one has specific expectations, i.e. being on the beach, etc.

Since part of the value add were the meals and beverages. The evening meal should have allowed being "heated up" instead of in trays that allow the food to cool down. Even though tasty, the food would have been improved if warmer. While they asked for allergies and preferences, I didn't realize that the menu would be as limited. For example, I would have liked on the " breakfast menu" an egg white option in the morning. The beer options should have provided at least a pilsner or something not hoppy. But these are not major issues. Lastly, a gent on their landscaping crew was smoking pot - that should be discouraged.

Our stay was a complete nightmare. The so-called “Pine Room” should never be rented out at the premium rate we paid. From 4:30–5:00 am, the noise from the reception and kitchen staff was so overwhelming that sleep was absolutely impossible. Imagine paying for a night in a hotel and being kept awake as if you were trying to rest in the middle of a busy train station. Because of this sleepless night, our entire next day was ruined — we were exhausted, drained, and unable to enjoy our trip. What’s worse is that I contacted the hotel directly, expecting at least an apology or an attempt to resolve the issue. Instead, I was completely ignored. That silence spoke louder than the noise that kept us awake. Charging premium prices for a room where sleep is impossible is already unacceptable — but to dismiss and ignore guests’ concerns afterwards is even worse. This was not just a disappointing experience, it felt like a complete disregard for basic hospitality.

We paid a steep price to stay at the hotel. Our visit included dinner and Breakfast. We felt like the representation of the “three course” meal for dinner was completely misleading. The portion size was more like an “appetizer” portion. My wife and I ended up going out and getting a meal in downtown Mendocino afterward. It would have been better if it was represented as so. The breakfast was great and felt fairly represented.

"Maybe ok for young adults, but not for us"

4.0

We’re 83, and that may shape our perspective. Our room was up three flights of stairs with no elevator—challenging for older guests. I’d requested an ocean view to bring my wife to her happy place, but the windows were small and didn’t offer much Ocean. The room was clean, but very small, with a single sink, low-profile toilet, and a step-in tub/shower with no grab bars—safety concerns for any age. There were no drawers, minimal furniture, and poor lighting. A wireless phone charger was a nice touch. The grounds have potential but were difficult to walk, with uneven terrain and no handrails at the spa entrance. The front entry had embedded stones, making rolling luggage tough. Thankfully, the receptionist kindly carried our bags upstairs—staff were consistently helpful and kind. Breakfast was good, especially the fresh-squeezed orange juice. The server, Victor excelled. Dinner served in a box with no menu options. A small deck with free wine and fresh air was pleasant, if lacking shade. We enjoyed watching Acorn Woodpeckers and appreciated the games and DVDs. On our third night, we were moved to a nicer room on the main floor with a better bathroom. I opened the unscreened windows. Nothing crawled in. The small candles for nighttime ambiance were lovely. Overall, the staff were the highlight, but the facility didn’t match the price point. We likely won’t return, but I’m not angry—just sharing our experience in hopes it helps the team improve.
