"It was okay but it definetly could have been better."

5.0

The pool area and the drinks were nice. Also the people at the pool bar were super nice as well. Akim was amazing !

The staff were not friendly or pleasant. The food was not good. Also it was hard to get anything you needed without asking multiple times.

"It’s Okay"

8.0

First and foremost the staff work really hard to make your staff enjoyable. For that reason I gave it 4 stars. Check in area is quite small with limited seating so when they tell you to come back at 3:30 (not 3) for your room, you’ll be jammed up with everyone else. Check is slow and they send you over to the concierge desk where they basically sign you up for a vacation club presentation. I will say it’s not too high pressured so they don’t call and bother you if you don’t show up. The promenade with the stores and restaurants is lovely and reminds me a bit of a Disney resort with the music played early in the morning. The birds and crickets sent up a symphony of sounds in the evenings and night ensuring you never felt alone. On the other hand, if you’re into horror movies you may get a different vibe from it. I prefer to go with the positive. I know my daughter who thinks birds are suspicious at the best of times would have had a little trepidation. The buffet had a lot of options. My view is for what Air Canada Vacations calls a 5 star, I would have expected better quality food. But it’s not the first time the star reviewer at Air Canada vacations has sent me to a 5 star that turned out to be more a 3.5-4 Star. Fool me once and all that - but I will not be fooled again. Taking the Tripadvisor ratings is the best course. The rooms have all the amenities and the beds are very comfortable. Water temperature and pressure was good and reliable. AC works well. The rooms and resort, I believe, were built during the Jamaica honeymoon boom but architects who think you want to lay in bed and watch your companion soak in the ti Make it’s a bit awkward if you are not in the situation where you want to show your bits to your travel partner. Our first room was supposed to be ocean view but all we could see was the plan tress so they moved us. Our first room had no drinks in the fridge and no slippers or hand soap and we had to request the soap and slippers. They did have robes though. Our second room had no soap and no slippers and no robes. There was water and two red stripe in the fridge however. Dinners are typically at the a La carte restaurants. Blue Mountain and Portofino were okay. The French - well my son had Octopus (high risk I know) and it was very mushy. I had the snapper and it was over cooked and dry. I will say I find the overcooking thing quite common in the Caribbean and I guess from a food safety standpoint it’s better overcooking than undercooking . Overall I found the food just okay and generally overcooked and over salted. The drinks from the bartenders at the inside bars were yummy and well made. At the pool, there was a heavy pour and ready mixes so I found them too strong and not to my taste. I would say most of the folks around. The pool enjoyed the pour to mix ratio and as I said staff aimed to please and I guess strong drinks do it. Cabana rentals start at $100 USD. Nice if you want to splurge. We found the Lou fees and pool umbrella suffice t for our needs and the loungers and huts at the beach worked fine. The beach is in the bay so no waves and is shallow (up to my neck) and it’s a protected marine area so there is some jelly fish from time to time. We spent the mornings in the ocean and had no issues. The pool is quite nice and accessible with gradual entry points. Towels are plentiful as are loungers. Servers are around and happy to bring you a beverage. Clientele was predominantly American and middle aged to seniors. Maybe two or three younger couples if that matters to you in your decision. Many indicated they had been there previously. I wouldn’t want to go back at the price I paid. I think part of the issue is as more and more of these resorts become part of the same umbrella group - Hyatt- there’s no need to compete and keep standards high. Having done the Sandals/Beaches thing a few times- I would have to say, in my opinion, the food and accommodations are not what they were at one time.

"Never again"

2.0

The hotel is in a lovely area that's where the good bit ends ! Preferred club absolute total rip off there was no stopping anyone who were not preffered guests from using our beach/pool and lounge so exactly what did I pay for!! I have never stayed as a preferred guest anywhere and not have a butler, apparently you need to be in a swim up room so I offered to upgrade but was told there where none for my stay which was absolute rubbish as we saw many empty for the duration of our stay but in hind sight I am so glad I did not give them anymore of my money ! Food was mediocre apart from the Italian Bar staff at beach bar ignorant you could be stood there 20 minutes before you got served it helped if you waved money in front of them ! I could go on but I am not wasting my time and effort Last time we will go to a Secrets

"Truthful review from travel agent of 32 years"

8.0

Beautiful resort. Lots of fun activities going on throughout the day. Outstanding evening entertainment. Small swimming areas with crystal clear water. Seaweed is thick in areas. The resort desperately needs more beach umbrellas. There is almost no shade. The pool area around the entertainment is crowded. People reserve chairs at zero dark thirty. We saw several guests claim territory on the beach as well as pool area. Bars were good with mostly friendly staff. The buffet is limited in selection and items are not replaced. The restaurants are lovely. The food is average. Overall very good experience.

"Not worth the trip."

2.0

Room service took over 1.5 hours if it even came! It took forever to get a table when we tried to go out to dinner. Food serve ran as long as 3 hours. Restaurants posted said they were open but they were closed. The bars in the morning were not stocked with rum or beer. We also had cockroaches in our room.

"Not what it used to be..."

4.0

It breaks my heart to write this review but I felt that I must to share this with others who are considering staying here. I have stayed at multiple Secrets over the years (Maroma Beach, SilverSands, Royal Beach, Cap Cana, Los Cabos, and both Jamaica ones - St. James and Wild Orchid) and it has become my preferred chain to go to. I haven't been on a vacation since Covid so wanted to go somewhere where I knew I would have a great time. I've stayed at both Wild Orchid and St. James previously (in 2015 and 2017) and had great experiences previously so I thought this would be a safe bet but was very disappointed. First, the prices went up which was shocking especially since it was off season but after talking to my travel agent and understanding how the industry is still recovering from the pandemic, I accepted the prices since other resorts and locations were even more expensive. I don't mind paying higher prices as long as I get the value for what I paid for. Where to start? First, I booked a preferred club room because I usually do given the perks that come with it and I was shocked and disappointed to see that the extra price that I paid for a preferred club really had no benefits. In the past, Secrets used to enforce where regular versus preferred club members could go but there was absolutely no enforcement of this at all. Regular guests were in our lounge and at our preferred club beach (not to member that Breathless guests also were in preferred club at Secrets). The quality of the food and beverages in the preferred club lounge have degraded significantly which was very disappointing. Long story short, the extra price of the preferred club was not worth it. Second, the quality of the food and drinks have dropped. One of the things that I really liked about Secrets is that I always count on good food and high end alcohol but that wasn't fully present on this visit. There was only one good restaurant, Bordeaux, and all of the others were below average. The other extremely disappointing thing is that one restaurant (Seaside Grill) was closed due to construction and given one less option, you would think all others would be open and that was not true. Oceana (seafood) was ONLY open for lunch, never for dinner and all of the other restaurants were not open 7 days a week so you need to plan out where to eat if you want to try all of the restaurants. Secrets used to offer high alcohol everywhere but now Sky Vodka is their high end at most bars (you can find Grey Goose in the preferred club lounge only). The preferred club room was extremely outdated. You could tell it needed a massive remodel. My room didn't have a soap dish and about 1/3 of the floor panels had gaps in it. The secret box (where the food dishes and room service is delivered) smelled awful. My other friend who stayed in a standard room had a nicer room than mine in preferred club (their room didn't seem so run down). The entire resorts needs a massive upgrade. The Spa was probably the best part of the vacation. The staff at the spa center were all extremely friendly and I enjoyed my experience there. The spa center does need an upgrade though. You can tell it is falling apart. The wood flooring is rotting and in certain places where you step, the wood literally bends and it is waiting to break. The second steam room was not being utilized and two showers were not working. The last major difference that I noticed is the general happiness of the staff. One of the reasons why I decided to go back to Jamaica is that my last two experiences were very memorable due to the people. The people were friendly and created a great experience previously. This time around, it felt like half of the staff hated their jobs and didn't want to be there. They just weren't as friendly as what I remembered from my last two trips. I am not sure why this experience was so terrible comparable to my previous two visits (granted my last visit was a long time ago). I did hear some rambling that this Secrets has been going downhill since Hyatt took over so I am not sure if all of this is just due to Hyatt taking over and doing whatever they want (i.e. trying to lower costs everywhere (labor, food, beverage, maintenance , etc.) and just focus on profits or not, but it feels like the customer is not at the center at this particular Secrets location anymore. I am torn on whether or not to book another vacation at a Secrets resorts after this experience. I used to love Secrets and recommended it to everyone but can't say that I will do that after this trip.

"Disappointed for my Wedding Group."

4.0

The resort rooms are very very outdated and very dirty. Saw roaches and had ants in Kleenex box. Mold on wall of one room. We got married there and had 34 people in our group. All our rooms were disgusting. Not my 1st time to Jamaica but definitely the dirtiest stay. The wedding process was amazing as well as the spa. Food was good but very long wait times at dine in restaurants. Pool was amazing!
