Friars Carse Country House Hotel

Fantastic location, up a long drive beside a lake.

It was a bit tired and was needing updated.

Location and the style of the property.

It needs a bit of money spending on it to make it look tidier. I didn’t like the doors to the stairs, quite fiddly when carrying luggage.

Booked and Stop last minute on a long family trip. Was worried that it was too fancy a place when. We arrived but couldn't have felt more welcome. Was brilliant will definitely go back

If you wanted to be critical the rooms are dated but doesn't really matter ads to the charm

Overall, Friars Carse felt like a budget‑end stay — perfectly fine, but far from exceptional. The setting and the historic house have real potential, but the experience didn’t match what was advertised or expected. Room & Stay The stay itself was adequate, but everything had the feel of being at the cheaper end of the market. Nothing was particularly wrong, but nothing stood out either. Both the house and the grounds would benefit from some attention and investment to bring them up to the standard suggested by the photos and description. Breakfast Breakfast was included in the room rate, but only continental — and this needs to be made much clearer at the time of booking. What was offered didn’t resemble a typical continental breakfast: • cereal • toast • stale croissants • tinned pineapple • tinned peaches • yoghurt A cooked breakfast was available, but only for an additional fee. Being told this in the morning rather than upfront felt misleading. Grounds & Facilities We walked around the grounds, which are pleasant in layout but, like the house, clearly need attention. With some care and maintenance, the setting could be a real asset. Overall Impression Friars Carse delivered a budget experience, and while the stay was fine, it didn’t feel like good value for money based on expectations. Clearer communication about what’s included — especially regarding breakfast — would make a big difference.

The receptionist was very friendly upon arrival. The hotel is a little antiquated eg actual room keys not fobs, but this adds to the charm. Room was very comfortable, nice bathroom.

Breakfast is just continental, a cooked one can be added for £9.50. Evening meal menu was a little confusing. Felt a little bizarre to have a Japanese tasting menu in such a small out of the way place! Other option was either fish or meat menu; not ideal for a veggie! Was also a little expensive I thought. Bar was rather tiny but nice old fashioned style lounging area where dogs are welcome.

Breakfast bearable but dinner disgusting. Weird Japanese/Spanish menu over complicated over priced and badly executed Premises could do with touch of tlc both inside and out
