Lovely location and great looking hotel with very good spa facilities.

The room did not have a fridge. The breakfast was terrible for a 4 star hotel. Lack of choice. Been to many 3 star hotels where you have more food options like different eggs, Pastries, fruit, the scrambled egg was made with powder milk, the coffee was disgusting. Most hotels have coffee machines now. The staff looked fed up, not a single smile or good morning and when shown to out table no explanation of what the set up was, how to get tea, coffee or that if you wanted eggs other than scrambled you had to ask for them. The evening restaurant was fully booked. I wasn't told this at check in. It looked pretty empty most of the evening. We went to the sports bar. Food nice but very expensive. Sharing platters aren't really sharing platters. They are small plates or starters. We were still hungry the end of the evening.

Stayed at Old Thorns for a birthday overnight stay and overall had mixed feelings. The hotel itself is lovely visually, with beautiful decor throughout, and the spa and gym facilities were definitely a highlight of the stay. We also ate in the sports bar and the food there was fantastic. The room itself was okay, beds were reasonably comfortable however the floors were noticeably dirty. It was also during the heatwave and the rooms became extremely warm overnight, with only a very small fan provided which unfortunately didn’t make much difference. The biggest disappointment was the main restaurant experience. Service staff were polite, but the food quality was really poor. Our fillet steaks were not cooked correctly, one meal had to be sent back, and after a long wait the wrong replacement meal arrived entirely. With an egg allergy involved, this was quite concerning. In the end, one of us didn’t eat a proper dinner at all. Such a shame as the hotel itself has so much potential and some areas were genuinely excellent, but the restaurant really let the experience down.
