"Good value for money but long way from riverfront bars!"

6.0

This hotel is excellent if you want somewhere cheap to stay in Phnom Penh & its close to the airport. Ideal for stop overs! However, its a long way from the bars and restaurants on the river front & 51 Street. Its too far to walk and it can be awkward to negotiate a good price with tuk tuk drivers. However, the rooms are clean and very big plus the staff are very helpful. Staying here can be very sensible if you do not mind paying or are sharing the price of the Tuk Tuk. Recommended!

"I rarely leave a bad review"

2.0

We were supposed to stay in the Lucky Star 2 hotel but they gave my room away to someone else who hadn't booked. Even though I had already paid for the room a week ago. This review is for the Lucky Star 1 which they transferred us to. I have been in Cambodia for 3 weeks so have stayed at a few hotels. Some at $35 per night, and some at $10 per night. The Lucky Star 2 should have been mid range but I have stayed in nicer hostels. There seems to be 3 Lucky Star hotels on the same stretch of road. We arrived at the wrong one where the staff didn't speak English and so they just pointed to the right. We assumed this meant we needed to go next door. But the Lucky Star 2 was actually down the road, across another street. Really not far to walk unless you are laidened with a heavy backback which we were when the Lucky Star 2 advised they had given our room away. They told us to go back to the hotel we had just come from as they had room but we were not offered a tuk tuk despite our luggage. We were supposed to get a superior room with balcony, mini bar, hot water, wifi, air con and sofa. We had none of these things as the hot water, wifi and air con were broken and the room was definitely not superior. Someone knocked on our door which we answered within 5 seconds. There was nobody at the door when we answered, and the only people around were hotel staff who were all staring at us. I think they knocked to have a look at the white people as they rudely stared and did not reply to my Hello every time we left the room. We expect this on the street but not in a hotel. There were people smoking all around the hotel and cigarette butts on the floors. We went to complain about the room but reception don't speak English and just pointed to the hotel across the road (which is also a Lucky Star!). We asked if what she meant was for us to go there and she nodded. So! We packed our bags and went to leave the hotel but the staff called us back before we crossed the road to ask us where we were going! Turns out, that the pointing woman meant that amenities I had asked for were available across the road but that they had no a available rooms. They called an English speaking woman over from the hotel who said that this was the only hotel we could stay in and we could not have a refund. We were clearly annoyed with this so she she took us to the hotel across the road where we met the only redeeming feature of this company. A man who spoke brilliant English and who apologised for what had happened. He even offered us his Internet dongle. But after a few phone calls he confirmed that he could not offer us anything else. He did give us a refund though and also made a call to another hotel (Hang Neak Hotel also has a review from me) in order to book us in. So $5 out of pocket after tuk tuk to new hotel and the extra cost of the new hotel room, and 1.5 hours later we were finally able to go for dinner!

"Lucky Star, a lucky find"

10.0

I really can't add much to what has already been said, but I can confirm that from the Soriya Bus Station, it is a $2 tuktuk ride, and from the hotel, it is $6 to the airport. The hotel has a small and eccentric lift; you have to be really, really very quick to enter, and make sure you hold the door when departing. Go for the upstairs room for a view.

"Worth it"

8.0

Took the taxi from the airport for USD9. Presented a print-out of my booking details and check-in only took a few seconds. The receptionist could speak English and allowed me to check-in at 9.30am ! Wow !.The room was big and satisfactorily clean. Impressed by the 68 channels TV, cool air-con, hot strong shower and free mineral water. Wifi provided free, strong at the lobby but weak in the room. Location-wise is OK, with tuk-tuk drivers on standby. About 100m from City Mall and less than 3kms away from the major attractions, including Riverside (Tonle Sap River, where the tourists are). Tuk-tuk charges USD 2 to these places. On returning to the airport, took a tuk-tuk for USD6. Negative points are no breakfast and CRT-type TV. Please note that Lucky Star 2 is a newer hotel about 100m away.

"Bad impression but there s room for improvement. That the whole idea of review"

2.0

This is my 3rd visit to this hotel. I ve booked a room for 3 in the hotel website for 2 nights with a promotion rate of USD 15/room. To my horrow, when i reached lucky star, they mentioned that my name is not in the booking system. Then after checking n showing the booking number again, they mentioned that it is in the system. When i reach the room, though the bed is clean, but there is no 3 sets of amenities for such as the most basic stuff towel. i told them we only have 1 towel for a room of 3. No action taken even i ve told the front desk girl. Then i have to go down to fetch the towel by myself. The next day, i told the front desk lady again that we have 3 person staying in that room and we need 3 basic towels. Nothing really happen, it was totally ignored. Then a friend of mine went down again and told her that we need 3 towels. Only by then, we have just got out towel. I have even ask the housekeeping lady why they give 2 small bottles of mineral water instead of 3 but it seems that there is a big communication problem with the housekeeping staff. I told her in ENGLISH that i don t mind paying for an extra bottle of water but she insisted that i can only get 2 bottles of water only. Even the Front Desk Lady told me that i can have 2 for the price that i ve paid. Does this show that with internet special promotion rate you will get NO SERVICE at all even if you insist on paying extra on the mineral water? I am very disappointed with this visit. The SERVICE is horrible and there is a SERIOUS COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN. The conclusion is there is, this will be my 3rd and last visit to this hotel. I hope that Lucky Star Hotel will improve on their service in the future as it is not just the Special Promotion Rate that attract a customer to a hotel, the most basic of all is the SERVICE.

"Lucky Star Hotel"

"No Complaints"

6.0

I first thought of choosing the hotel on my trip to Phnom Penh only because it looked like a hotel in my hometown Ipoh (Malaysia) which happens to go by the name Lucky Hotel. Looks the same, sounds the same. What are the odds. I would avoid a shophouse motel at all costs so hence, this very building just had to be my choice when I went through the Air Asia Go hotel list for Phnom Penh. On a choking tight budget of course. It's less than half a kilometer away from the palace but not on the same road. On arrival, you might step back a little due to a slight language barrier with the staff, but it all worked out well in the end. They understood my booking documents and quickly assigned me a room. As per the reviews here, I proceeded to ask for a room away from the weddings, but unfortunately, just that one little request of mine they misunderstood. I think as soon as I mouthed the word "weddings" they thought I would like to see them. So, I got a room nearer to the weddings but luckily it was on the top floor. The weddings didn't murder me and I even enjoyed a bit of local Cambodian merriment and it was all for free. Not to worry too much about the weddings, I meant to say here. Only during weekends. The lift in the pictures looked frighteningly small, but it wasn't. 3 people could fit in it in one go quite comfortably. As soon as I got into the room, I immediately thanked God, because it was unfairly roomy for such a low price. The balcony was even longer and wider than some 5 star hotels'. Towels, slippers, soaps, shampoo packets, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and a comb were evident in my room. No complimentary instant drink packets but I got a 1500ml mineral water bottle daily. If you haven't got them, you just need to ask from the maid. There was a fridge but there wasn't a kettle. You can get hot water from the lobby but you may need to bring down your bowls or cups. Not a hassle actually. Also in the lobby there was a computer which you could use for free if the Wi-Fi suddenly froze in your room. I got that a lot on my second and third day there. It worked fine on arrival though. The Wi-Fi was named 'lucky04' but they might change it someday. They have cable tv and you just need to press all the 99 channels to get what you need. There wasn't a menu in the room because there were no dining rooms. So, don't expect to go for breakfasts in the morning. Also, you need to inform them one day in advance if you need airport transfer and not anytime sooner. An extra charge of course. I left for the airport at 5am and I think they operate 24 hours round the clock. To me it's probably the best hotel for backpackers and people who aren't status conscious. To be status conscious in Phnom Penh would be silly anyway. It got me a huge air-conditioned room and me and my mom slept soundly and happily every night, before we woke up the next morning and laughed all the way to the tourist market!
