Staff grumpy not welcoming. Though staff in the morning was welcoming.

There wasn’t a lot to like. Location maybe? Pretty central in the Cotswold.

The staffing was like a scene from Faulty Towers - asking 3-4 times for your meal and being chastised when you ask a simple question about timings. Waiting at the bar to buy a pint, while the manager on duty is refilling bottles rather than taking orders from customers. As we were checking out, another couple recounted that a random man came into their room. The manager looked at them and explained that ‘yeah he probably grabbed the master key that hangs there (pointing to a hook by the desk)’. Don’t go there - much nicer properties close by.

The room was at the back of the hotel - ugly view of flat roof and air con/regrigeration units - net curtain would have been an improvement There was a rumble from air con until approx 10 pm and it woke me up 7 am A comfortable chair in the room would have been nice

The property and the room were fine. The bar is good and the outdoor space is good too.

The hotel is badly let down by the restaurant. We had booked to eat there for two nights and on the first night my wife had the chestnut and mushroom pie which was cold! I had scampi and chips which was little more than ok. The pork ribs starter was very nice though. We had to have three attempts to select one of the wines on the list that was actually in stock. On the second night we were shown to a table that was barely two foot squared, so I suggested that it was too small to be comfortable, but the waiter just said “sorry about that”, he didn’t offer to seat us at one of the larger tables that were set up for two and that were not used all evening. Things went downhill from there, it took over half an hour to find a bottle of wine that we selected, again we had to make a few selections to get one that was in stock. Then I had to prompt the staff about the water we had ordered but had been forgotten about. We got our food order before any drinks. We chose the same starter as the previous evening as we had enjoyed it. However this time the ribs were charred to a cinder, with a disguise of lots of sauce. We had to send them back as they were inedible. The mains of fish and chips, which were poor and a prawn and crab linguine. This dish had so much garlic in it, it was impossible to taste anything else. I like garlic dishes, but this was eye watering! Most of it went back uneaten. The service on the second night was chaotic and the food awful. The starter was acknowledged to be poor and was removed from our bill.

As a repeat customer came with a friend to try out the new spring menu on offer. As always delicious food and friendly, helpful service. Our favourite spot in Shipston
