"Good"

4.0

The building itself, cream tea (the scones and the jam were excellent)

In need of a refurb and redesign, from the reception to the dining room. No real vibe, food was mediocre at best - very average dinner cooked to a poor standard, breakfast akin to what you experience in Premier Inn rather than a luxury hotel. No effort on staff part either. No offer of help with the luggage. And to top it up, 5 minutes after our check-in for a one night stay an email arrives prompting you to submit all your details and get ready to depart. All-in-all, don't expect much from this hotel.

"Very disappointing really despite the nice location."

4.0

Location and grounds were very nice.

Room, especially the bathroom, was very poor. Access to the room via a very steep staircase was downright dangerous and probably in contravention of regulations. Evening meal was very very average and very poor value.

Lovely setting

Our room was quite cold as heating cut out too soon in the evening.

"Do not stay here"

1.0

Nothing really

We stayed for 2 nights in a 'superior' room, there was nothing superior about it. The room was dirty, dusty and the furniture was worn and chipped. There were large cobwebs in the corners of the ceilings with spiders visible, dead wasps and flies along the dirty windowsill. There was a thick layer of dust along the mirror of the dressing table that clearly hadn't been touched for a while, and the drawers were dusty inside it. There was a hairdryer that didn't have a nozzle on the end of it in the dusty, smelly wardrobe (that had a mish mash of coat hangers). I would NOT hang my clothes in there! I asked about replacing the hairdryer or at least if I could have a nozzle to put on the end and was told they didn't have any or any spare hair dryers! The carpet was stained, and the seat cushion under the grubby window was stained and dirty. We did not realise that we would not have a shower in the bathroom but just a bath at the bottom of the bed! I asked if we could have a room with a shower instead and was told no. During the night several times, we were woken by an intermittent buzzing/humming noise. I'm not sure if it was a washing machine, but it was loud and disturbed our sleep massively. Breakfast was ok, not great, and the tables were not set properly, we had to take butter off another table as none on ours and no staff around to ask. No 'do not disturb' signs in the room. On our first morning, I left the curtains closed to keep out the hot sun and to keep the room cool. When we returned to our room later in the evening from being out all day, the curtains had been opened, and our room was boiling hot! We only realised when we were there that the hotel is being revamped in a couple of months but the cleanliness of our room etc has nothing to do with this. This is definitely not a 4* hotel and we could not wait to check out and I would not recommend.
