The Castle Inn Hotel

We would have liked to have stayed at the Castle Inn having booked on 7 April to stay on the nights of 18 and 19 April. We were attracted to the hotel’s character, setting and the overall experience it offered Unfortunately, a day before we were due we were told that the Inn was fully booked and we were to be accommodated in the Tollgate Hotel, a largely deserted building undergoing refurbishment some five minutes walk away from the Inn. The room we were given was supposed to be an upgrade and although it was large, its furnishings were tired and worn, several light bulbs didn’t work, the shower was feeble and the bathwater barely tepid. One television didn’t work and the other offered only BBC iPlayer and the duvet was too small for the bed. At night the place was dark and very solitary. We had to walk to the Inn to take breakfast and any other meals, just as well we are relatively fit 78 and 76 year olds. We were offered dinner on our first night but this was little compensation for our disappointment. It wasn’t practicable to make use of the lounge and bar at the Inn. The money for the booking was taken a week before we came to the hotel. It must have been known then that the booking couldn’t not be honoured and we should have been given the option of cancellation or alternative accommodation at reduced rates. Booking.com should have been made aware of the problem before the charge for the room became due. So we have to conclude our experience was a very unhappy one.

Staff gave us a warm welcome, room met are requirements and evening meal and breakfast was excellent in value for money and presentation.

Good selection for breakfast and cooked options excellent.

The toaster threw the toast out onto the floor - actually quite amusing!

I like the room and the restaurant.

One of the towels in the room had what looked like bloods stains on , but could have been make up, so that was a bit off putting.

Goid location not far from the South Downs Way where we had a 3 day walk, lovely vegetarian avocado egg breakfast, very freindly staff who despite being busy popped up in 5 mins when we couldn't operate TV PERFECT

Perfect for our needs

We were visiting family so stayed here for the location. Beautiful village and was great to have a car park at the back to use. The staff were very nice. Clean room.

The first room we were given wasn’t good and also wasn’t the room we had booked. The room, although clean was filled with bulky furniture which meant it felt very cramped. The bathroom had a flimsy door as was tiny. In fairness we did get this resolved and were moved to a garden room as we had booked and this was nice. The gentleman who sorted this for us did it very begrudgingly but the other staff were lovely. For a building so full of history it felt soulless inside and lacks character and atmosphere. Sadly this property has a lot of potential but I probably wouldn’t stay here again. This was our second visit and after having issues both times we would probably look elsewhere.
