"oude grandeur en charme"

8.0

Ontbijt was ok. Prijs-kwaliteit ok.

"Go there to experience former sanatorium"

7.0

I stayed here for the experience of spending a night in a former Soviet-era sanatorium. The highlight for me was being able to explore the property, including the unrestored areas, which gave a glimpse into its past. Breakfast was good as well.

The furnishings are rather old-fashioned and not the most updated. The toilet did not flush properly, and the staff were not particularly service-oriented, perhaps fitting the Soviet-era atmosphere.

"Unique place to stay"

7.0

The building is very interesting and set in beautiful grounds. The room itself was spacious and clean. It's a unique place to stay and would recommend for the experience of staying in a renovated sanitorium.

Lots of the amenities listed on the hotel's booking.com page we're not available e g. the pool was not filled and the lobby bar was closed while we were there even though it was supposed to be open. We wanted to see the theatre and Stalin's old room but neither were available for us to look at when we asked at reception.

"A nostalgic, adventurous, and relaxing experience"

9.0

We loved everything. We spent one week at the hotel and there was no problem at all. We had a very calm room with windows to the park, that allowed us to sleep with our windows opened. We had no issue with water supply, construction works or cleaning services. During our stay we even got a new fridge - we came home and there we discovered we had a new fridge and the staff moved all our food and drinks inside. Also, we came home one day and just in front of our door they started to renovate the walls, but whenever we were in the room it was quiet and we did not notice anythiyng from outside. We loved breakfasts outside on the terrace and excellent homemade diary products, jam and pastries served every day. The only thing we missed was the outside hotel pool which was not opened in May due to the revitalisation works. But we payed some treatments in the spa ("Spring") premises and these were great, too. The bath in the healing water was our everyday favourite. The location is pleasant and relaxing and the huge "central" park was always nice, quiet and clean. We also recommend to visit Otia Ioseliani House-Museum which is located 20 minutes on foot across the park. The museum used to be a house of a known writer and a guided tour with an option of wine or beer tasting is provided both in Russian and English. The Prometheus cave is located nearby and it is an amazing nature wonder one must see. And there are plenty of other options what to do nearby, if you do a small research.

Here, we want to highlight a few things that might be misleading when reading other reviews. This is a unique resort in a unique country, and guests should be aware of where they’re going and what to expect. It cannot be compared to Western hotel chains or spa resorts. The sanatorium was abandoned for many years, and the fact that the new owners are trying to repair it and keep it running deserves recognition. You can’t drive right up to the entrance, true, but the main gate is a five-minute walk away, and the side entrance on the street is just two minutes away. The staff does what they can; they may not smile obsequiously at you, but they also let you breathe freely without bothering you. It’s no problem to bring your own food and drinks to your room and consume them on the hotel premises, but please do so respectfully. You have to go to the spa for treatments, as they cannot be done in the hotel. The healing radon water must be fresh-flowing; if it were piped into hotels and filled into bathtubs, it would lose its effectiveness. The treatments are inexpensive; you can go without a prior appointment and are always served immediately. No one was rude to us anywhere; on the contrary, we always came to an agreement with everyone on everything, and everything worked out. Yes, knowing Russian is an advantage, but it’s even more important to be polite, to respect the country, its people, their culture, and their way of doing things. Don’t act like a materialistic and ill-mannered tourist who imagines that for €30 per person, they’ll be staying at the Ritz with Michelin-star-level cuisine.
