Western Hotel Ouray

RESTURANT ONLY-The place and STAFF were Awesome. The food.... well, a bit overpriced for what you get, and not that good (yet). I was told the chef and restaurant were newly re-opened. I ordered the Bison skewers. Note to chef, Bison is tough, not the best meat for a skewer, it was so tough and chewy. The garnishment was great though. However, it was 50 bucks for a dinner, I could barely chew. We didnt say anything, as the staff was so nice. But..chef..bison is best for a burger :)

The room itself was nice, liked having a little kitchenette. There was a window in the shower which was only covered on the bottom part but I could easily see/be seen by neighboring buildings. Although it is newly redone, the sink did not drain well and some shelves were not level. Bed was also very low to the ground, would be an issue for anyone with mobility concerns. There is also no elevator so be mindful of carrying suitcases. When I was there the restaurant and bar were closed for a private event so I had to scramble to find dinner/place to relax as I had planned on trying out their restaurant/bar. Overall it was a nice location but not worth the price.

Although we did not stay here, we went inside the lobby and bar/restaurant area, before they opened for business. Lovely wooden bar with a stuffed mountain lion on te wall above the mirrors. There is a painting of a lady dated 1917. Some antiques around too. The restaurant area very nice indeed. Pity we did not have time to experience the food.

I had a very mixed experience at the Western Hotel in Ourary. While the owners deserve immense credit for preserving a very old timber building and making it a great place to stay, there is also no question that there is a degree of false advertising. In reality, the Western Hotel is NOT a hotel. It is really an Airbnb or boarding house. Calling it a hotel sets a standard and means reasonable expectations are not fulfilled. Especially at the price. $600 for a room is at the same price point of the St. Regis in Aspen. The Western Hotel is not only NOT a real hotel but the idea that the services and amenities are worth $600 per night is absurd. If the owners marketed this as an Airbnb and had more reasonable rates, I would have zero complaints. But basics expected at $600 like turndown service, daily housekeeping, a staffed 24/7 front desk, a porter or bellman to assist with bags (there are no elevators), etc. were all missing. Don't get me wrong. I think they did a very nice job in saving this historic property. But this is NOT a hotel. The value I received for $600 was horribly bad. All things considered, you can go A LOT better in Ouray at the Beaumont Hotel. It's about half the price.

Nice, quiet and quaint hotel. Check in super easy as all the info texted to me prior to arriving. No elevator and stairs are a bit steep so be warned.

Appreciate the restoration of a wonderful old structure that was certainly close to falling down. However, the room we booked was almost like staying in a camper. The room was small and the bed uncomfortable. The linens were weird and scratchy (sheets and towels). The stairs--which were not pointed out on the website--were dangerously steep. My husband was nearly unable to use these. The handles on the bathroom door kept falling off and there was no real storage anywhere for luggage or clothing with the exception if a clothing rod in the kitchen. There were no in-room instructions on any amenities like the TV, kitchen or who to call in case of emergency. In fact, there was no means at all to call for service or information. This was an issue for us when our room began to literally vibrate due to the operation of the new boiler outside the building. To top it off, as two members of the kitchen team left their night shift, they used the area immediately below the window of our room to clean something with a loud clanging sound. Perhaps this was all part of the old west ambience but did not make for a pleasant stay in a very expensive room. Hope these are all new operation kinks and will be corrected for future guests.

Everything was beyond expectations. Room, food, location, staff.

Beautifully renovated property. Staff was friendly. Location was perfect in the middle of town and made everything very walkable. Room was well appointed and had great views. The bathroom sink was clogged and didn’t drain well until we addressed it. Room needed a little more functionality with the location of the kitchenette sink and was a little short on storage space.

We loved our stay at The Western. So much history, you can feel it! Such a comfortable bed and interesting design. Ouray is incredible in itself and we were excited to find such this new upscale option - for those looking for something a bit elevated. Highly recommend!
