The owner is friendly and drove us to the bus station when we were leaving, which I appreciated. He also refunded us two days of our stay when we left on the first morning, which I guess is fair. There's an ok onsen in the basement.

I don't entirely understand why this gets as good reviews as it does. There is a sewage smell all over the hotel, but the shared toilets had a stench that was beyond anything I have experienced in my life. The moment someone would open the door, it would make the whole floor smell of an rank, sour putridness completely unlike onsen sulphur smell or sewage. Indescribable. In addition, one of our rooms had fingernail-sized bugs appearing in a steady pace through the evening and night, at least once landing on my bed in front of me. Another oddity is the in-room speaker which makes loud announcements at regular intervals starting at 7:30 am. I understand it's an old-timey Japanese thing, and I could have found it quirky, but honestly I just didn't like it. The rooms are also not sound proof in the slightest and in reality I was woken up by a crying child long before the first announcement. For us, it was so bad we couldn't handle staying, and finding a room last minute in Nozawa Onsen was impossible, so it meant we just had to cancel our Christmas ski-trip, which I definitively did not like.
