"Wonderful authentic Japanese stay with perfect service"

10.0

Fantastic traditional Japanese accommodation. A wonderful experience in traditional rooms, traditional tee (complimentary) a beautiful outdoor onsen, delicious traditional breakfast, perfect service, parking directly in front of the property, and restaurants nearby (an extremely good sushi restaurant right next door).

"Excellent food, private hot springs, and lovely staff"

9.0

The breakfasts were wonderful! And the kaiseki dinner, which you have to reserve at least 5 days ahead of time and will cost extra, was absolutely amazing. All the meals they provide focus on local specialties: in this area, that's apples, mushrooms, and Shinshu wagyu. The staff is super nice and does speak English. Be aware that Tawaraya is located down the hill from the bus station, not in the uphill area of town that most onsen and restaurants are located, and Google Maps will not guide you there correctly -- it's only about a 10 minute walk but check the map on the Booking.com site to find the little path that turns behind buildings near the train station to go down the side of the retaining wall. The property is beautiful inside! The rooms are large, Japanese style, and futons are comfortable. The outdoor hot springs pool is open to guests generally for most hours and then reserved for private use in the evening for half-hour increments, which is really lovely! The indoor hot springs with the traditional showers are separated for male and female guests, and don't take sign ups. There are mostly snack bars near the ryokan, but it's a short walk up the hill to the main streets of town where there are quite a number of restaurants. There is a visitor's center by the bus station that will help guide you to what you want to do, including catching buses to see the monkeys in the hot springs, the ski runs, or other interests, and they also sell local souvenirs. You can follow a trail around town to see places associated with the poet Issa, or visit other landmarks such as the Kannon statue of world peace, or drop in at the free outdoor foot baths.

"Wonderful ryokan in yudanaka"

9.0

Amazing ryokan with wonderful friendly staff. I wish we were able to stay longer as it was just 1 night for us to visit the snow monkey park. Yudanaka is a great town. Friendly locals and good food. The ryokan facilities were excellent as is their morning breakfast. The outdoor onsen is great too.

Not much to complain about - it was a very nice stay
