It was great

Although not on the sea front the location was still excellent for reaching the coast and the coast path. The room was very clean and facilities were up to date including the bathroom.

Although nights since my stay have been warmer still, it was pretty warm over night and there was no obvious air conditioning or failing that, a fan. I was also not able to open the window for ventilation.

Room was spotlessly clean and good location. Staff were pleasant. The meal on our second day in the evening was delicious.

We were disappointed with the breakfast as we had to walk through-the kitchen and was told breakfast was from 8.30am and it wasn’t prepared. We had to wait then then the ham and cheese were in the fridge. Milk one day away from being out of date which I put on my cereal but couldn’t possible eat it. Second day was better the ham and cheese presented for us. No full English option.

The majority of the staff, the cleanliness of the room, the decor, the proximity to the promenade, the strength of the WiFi, high ceilings, There is a good selection of lagers and beers though guests should be aware that the drinks are, for this part of Northumberland, pricier than one might expect eg £2.30 for a half. The menu seemed to have something for everyone. My favourite starter was the Goat Cheese Salad and pudding was the Eton Mess - a dish that rarely appears on the menu. The chips that come with their steaks were perfe tly cooked and, with seasoning, very tasty. Guests should be aware that, as an older and characterful building, there is no lift and that access to the rooms is via a staircase with two turns in it.

The entrance to the accommodation is very scruffy and not at all in keeping with the rooms or upper corridor. The breakfast - despite reviews and photographs suggesting otherwise - is continental and was not set out on the mornings that I was the only guest. The guest information file was incorrect in terms of the WiFi password (also, there were three possible networks to choose from and no indication of which to use) and the menu, which was out of date. There was no chain or bolt on the room door, just the lock, making it feel less secure for the solo traveller. Finally, and this is personal taste, I found the bed to be very soft and the pillows to be very flat. Using all four was necessary for a side sleeper.
