Great location, comfy bed, staff were very welcoming. Very quirky lovely pub.

Unfortunately the shower pressure was terrible! The water kept cutting out completely. I couldn't wash my hair as it would have taken all day to get the shampoo out. The windows need cleaning. No fresh coffee at breakfast and the bacon was cremated. However we would stay here again though.

We were. looking for a good value breakfast and not hungry enough for the one at our hotel. We noticed signs in the window of this pub close to the city walls, so called in. It’s a typical pub, but they have rooms and serve breakfast to residents and passers by. All we wanted was their bacon and sausage sandwiches with a coffee. It was freshly cooked, tasty and really good value for money. It was just what we needed, so we went back the next day as well. Very happy customers.

Central and convenient

Just what we were looking for, a place where you get to meet the locals, have entertainment (a live band on Fridays) and be close to the city centre. The bar staff were very welcoming and friendly, and we had a great time getting to know them and the locals. The room was lovely and the bed was comfy and instead of room numbers the rooms are named, ours was called 'The Grand Old Duke of York'. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for the same things as us. We had an amazing time here, thank you and hopefully we will be back in the future.

Stayed for two nights, we got there early and the fabulous Jane let us leave our cases, we stayed in the York Castle room, we then had a drink in the bar and met Mike (one of the locals) with his dog Ozzie, the pub is great, everyone is so friendly, our room was at the back, it was very clean, it had everything we needed, it even had an ironing board and iron! The bed was comfy and the room was quiet so we had a good sleep each night! The shower was spotless and the water was hot, towels were provided. Breakfast was brilliant, freshly cooked, free tea, coffee and fruit drinks. Its location is amazing, it’s on top of everything and there’s a fab Indian restaurant 3 doors away (Raj). Our stay was made perfect by the lovely Jane, nothing was too much trouble for her, she works so hard. We will certainly book the Bootham on our next trip up to York.

Come here for a full breakfast ( not veggie as its just egg beans mush room tomato and toast - no hash browns or veggie sausage etc ) And have a nice pint with music and sports tv on …but dont stay here.! Our Room on top floor was red hot ,no air con and the pitiful tower fan was just a noise machine, shower didnt work for 3 mins after being turned on.. then when it “kicked in” it just dribbled a bit then stopped after 30 secs . Mould on walls in bathroom you cant turn the towel radiator off so that made room even hotter. Had to have windows open as so hot ( view of roof ) then it was very noisy from the pub and surrounding area so take ear plugs as non are provided.

Closeness to centre of York / Shambles etc. Lovely bar downstairs and the breakfast was excellent!

The property was excellently situated just around the corner from the Minster. The rooms are well presented with everything you need and staff are very helpful. The pub down stairs is well stocked and a nice environment to be in. Jane was amazing and very generous on our arrival to take our bags in early so we could make the most of our time in York. The breakfast offer is great and the food was lovely, well cooked and great products. The cost of the breakfast offer was well priced and so worth the money spent. I would highly recommend this place for your visit and would happily pay to stay here again.
