"Great place to stay!"

10.0

Great location and above all my expectations. The hotel is right in front of the wetland, a few mins walk from the centre, but in such a peaceful location that will blow your mind. Food is also good, and staff is great too!

You can only pay with cash. They let you know in advance so that you can come prepared.

"You won't be disappointed!"

8.0

This relaxing hotel has such a great location within Caño Negro, close to the river, other restaurants and the visitor centre. The boat tour was fantastic. Visiting in the drier times of April, we also enjoyed walking to the lagoons and the newly constructed raised walkway in the early mornings and late afternoons - we saw lots of birds including a few hawks up close. Breakfast is lovely and fresh. Dinner is delicious with freshly made pasta on offer and lovely complimentary salad and fresh bread to enjoy. The hotel has it's own bird hides, these were great!

Pool towels are not provided.

"A lovely place to stay in Cano Negro. The food was excellent and the staff very welcoming."

8.0

The room was in a gorgeous setting and we enjoyed the ambiance. The food was really good! The staff were very helpful and so friendly. Such an enjoyable stay.

It was soooo hot when we went (March) and there is no AC. We knew that though. We left the windows open and there were no screens. A few of us got bitten during the night by insects.

"Hotel de Campo offers a unique experience for nature lovers, but not without challenges."

8.0

We saw an abundance of wildlife, especially birds, which we did not see anywhere else in our travels in Costa Rica. We booked a morning boat tour down the Rio Frio and associated lagoons and that was well worth the cost. We found that 4 hours on the boat was too much for us, though. The food in the hotel restaurant was very good, fresh homemade pasta being supplied daily by Andrea's (the owner) father. The restaurant is the only game in town and the menu is limited and prices unknown (we paid about $25/person for a meal and a drink). Andrea was very responsive to me when I inquired about food preferences prior to our arrival and there were vegetarian options supplied. Our kids enjoyed the pool and the adults were able to enjoy a cold Imperial at the bar after the long drive there.

The rooms were very dated and the bathroom could have used some TLC. The minisplit A/C units and fan kept the temperature comfortable. As mentioned in other reviews, they leave the room doors open between guests so there were a few bugs in our room, but not many. The bed was pretty firm as were the pillows and we would have appreciated and extra blanket. Since the hotel only accepts cash for everything, we were a little uncomfortable carrying that much money around, especially when we had no idea how much the food would be. The drive from La Fortuna up Rt. 35 is not bad, with only about 10 miles on Rt. 138, some of which is gravel. Be warned, though, that approaching from the west on Rt. 138 is a long slog on a hilly gravel road, replete with numerous potholes. It soured our group on the whole experience, in spite of the great wildlife viewing.

"Great place for birding/birders"

10.0

A wonderful place! Roseate Spoonbills (large pink birds kind of like flamingos) flew over while the kids were swimming at the pool; the boat tour booked additionally through the property was terrific, with >50 species of birds seen.

The road coming from Bijagua was a bit rough (did not need to use our 4WD, but if it was much wetter we would have). Going out towards Arenal, the road was great.
