"A shambles - avoid"

1.0

The beer garden was pleasant, nice to sit out in the sun.

1. When we arrived the hotel was closed, with a note on the front door explaining a new boiler was being fitted! We found a side door and eventually found a disinterested member of staff, who checked with someone and eventually made our room available to us, but the bar remained closed even to resident guests. There had been no effort to contact us to explain what was going on, so we could have had the opportunity to book elsewhere. Nobody cared, we were unimportant. 2. The room we were allocated (room 1) was extremely shabby and absolutely filthy - broken window catches and hinges, filthy carpet, rotten window ledges and windows, a bathroom window sealed shut by the overgrown external vegetation. I amused myself for a few minutes digging out the matted hair and God knows what else from the carpet with the sole of my shoe. We should have left at this point but tired after a day sightseeing decided to overlook the issues we were finding and have some dinner. Big mistake. 3. The bar eventually reopened after a bit of pressure from me, but after a couple of pints, when we went to our dinner reservation we were told the kitchen had been abruptly closed due to the 'on-going boiler problems'. No matter we had booked, no matter earlier diners were being served, we were not going to be fed that evening. As my driving limit had been exceeded, dinner required a 30m walk into Lichfield, something we could have done without. 4. However, the next morning we were able to order a cooked breakfast - it would seem the 'ongoing boiler issues' had been resolved overnight. (A touch of sarcasm here). 5. We asked for and were allocated a different room (room 5) which was an improvement in that it was cleaner, but it had a toilet that required vigorous pumping on the handle to get it to flush, delightful stains on the head-board from the oil from many many heads, and a sofa bed that fell apart when sat on. You know - to treat your guests in this way is just insulting.

"Welcoming, clean and comfortable, an enhancing feature of our short stay in Lichfield."

8.0

Refurbishment in progress and with the hotel hosting a large event on the day that we checked in resulted in the staff being under pressure with consequent delay in our room preparation. Nonetheless, our welcome was cordial and helpful, if somewhat apologetic for the circumstances of the day. None of that detracted from our pleasant time at an outside table under a parasol with a cool drink in the beautiful and extensive well maintained grounds. The room was fully adequate to our needs and expectations, fresh, clean and tidy with good walk-in shower as well as the now customary provision for tea and coffee in the room.

Nothing comes to mind, really.

"Excellent find - will go back"

10.0

It is a beautiful house, tastefully decorated with an old world homely feeling and a magnificent garden. The staff are excellent and would grace any hotel of 5 stars, polite - helpful and welcoming- I cannot praise them highly enough. From the moment we entered nothing was too much trouble and everything was done with efficiency and a surprising speed - from the bar staff to the kitchen to the cleaners - everyone played their part - we ate three meals - every meal was delicious - and served fresh and most importantly hot - the atmosphere was pleasant. I highly recommend.

"Loved it , comfortable , food excellent, staff excellent"

10.0

The property and rooms, restaurant were lovely , albeit squeaky floorboards in the room , but that added to the charm.

It was quite noisy with the traffic and there must be an ambulance station or hospital quite near , but not a major issue

"Very Good"

7.0

- the bed was very comfortable - pub served good food and had a lovely beer garden - great sized portions at breakfast - close to Lichfield centre - on site free parking - friendly staff

- there was a really bright green spotlight in the room that made the whole room incredibly light during the night. This made it really difficult to sleep - bathroom was fairly dated - the rooms were fairly noisy given it is next to a busy road and the rooms are above a pub - thought the price was quite expensive for what you got
