Nice quiet location

Not being able to stand upright in our room was a bit of a problem considering the room was tiny.

The view from our balcony was magnificent and spectacular. We watch both sunrise and sunsets. You can see the majority of Otago Harbour. The castle was amazing and definitely worth revisiting. The Dinner in the castle’s official dining room was a great experience and worth every cent. Breakfast was complimentary and quite delicious. Roaming the grounds at night with all the lighting was excellent. Worth every cent.

If you are scared of heights, then the drive up may traumatise you. Recommend you take the Castlewood Road with is on the right on the road to Portabello. Much shorter than the other two roads and much less scary.

Dinner was nice but dimly lit room so it wasnt easy to read the menu unless held under a candle and difficult to actually view the food on the plate. Understand the wanting to create an ambience of times gone by but needed more light in room when dining. Breakfast was excellent and great service.

The access from the Lodge to the castle dining room wasnt the best on a wet winter night. Access was through the back of property, slippery cobbles, puddles and inadequate lighting. Also having to go up the steps to the front of the castle could pose a difficult climb for elderly. We were advised to mind where we stepped. Perhaps some under cover walk way or improvement to the pavinhg could be offered. Upon leaving dinner the path lighting could be improved as not terribly well lit on a winter dark night and no umbrellas offered if its raining to walk the driveway back to the lodge accommodation. Car parking at the Lodge was at a minimum - not a lot of room for getting cars in and out if more than 4.

Brendan was excellent, very welcoming. Beautiful view from room 22. The castle dinner was delicious and was a fun experience.

The castle is absolutely beautiful, and the accommodation experience was excellent.

Hats off to Brendon and the staff there. We had the best stay for 3 days. Very accommodating and helpful staff and a fantastic venue. Definitely will be spending more time there over the following years.
