Tampat do Aman

This place was an absolute gem near the tip of Borneo. It's larger than I expected it to be and has everything you need. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the showers (in a remote place like this I'd expect a bucket shower but it was a 'proper' one!) and the owner is incredibly nice. Would've loved to stay a bit longer to have the time to explore the reserve or go in there at night to see the starts and/or sunrise.

Lots of mosquitos but that's expected in a place like this :)

Great community based wildlife reserve & accommodation. This place is as described. Chalet room with fan and adjoining bathroom and terrace. We really enjoyed our time here and that was a lot down to our host, Howard. He toured us around the whole place, explaining what he does there and let us roam in his reserve - which is a must. He served a morning breakfast of eggs on toast and coffee/tea, where all guests congregated and chatted about their plans for the day, swapping advice about their trips etc. we arrived via public transport into Kudat. Howard was able to arrange a driver to pick us up and drive us to Tampat do Aman. We stayed 3 nights and every day Howard gave us a lift to different parts of the coast and picked us up every evening. Offering advice on best places to eat and visit etc. He was a great host, going above and beyond for his guests. We left via public transport also on the 7.30am bus to Sandakan from Kudat. Howard was very helpful in explaining to us where and when buses are. These are not frequent. Every 2-3 days at time of our stay.

The property is rough and ready - as expected - and very much in the jungle! Not really a negative but might not be appropriate for all visitors.

If you like a peaceful and relaxing stay in nature, this is your place. Facilities are very basic, but all you need is there. Howard is a great and enthousiastic host. The area is nice, close to the Tip of Bornea and some wonderful beaches.

Howard is an amazing host, giving brilliant tips on all the best places to go. We had hired a car and were grateful for the freedom it gave us - allowing us to explore all the hidden gems of the area. Don't be expecting 5 stars, but you won't find a more perfect paradise.

Note that Howard only accepts payment in cash so make sure you've been to a cashpoint on your way as nearest one is 30 minute drive away.

The breakfast was excellent, absolutely nailed the eggs!

Only downside was mosquitos but that’s unchangeable, and it also can be looked at positively, every time I was bitten I was reminded “man I really am in the outdoors”

Howard was a fantastic host who had lots of info and passion for the area. He goes the extra mile to welcome you to the site. He also provides an option of drop off and pick up to and from the tip area or wherever you wanted close to the beach (within reasonable distance), great if you have no vehicle. Opportunity to do own little night walk in his little reserve that he has built himself across the road from his place where in the past he has seen slow lorises and pangolins. Howard can also assist in helping you get to the property if needed.

Howard tells you what to expect at the property in advance so you don’t come with high expectations of staying in a plush resort! It was however tough with just a fan to keep you cool. Obviously you cannot expect AC and it is stated but the heat was a tough one to handle, nothing against the place though and the cold showers helps cool you down! The little shacks are pretty cute for a night or two but I did find myself longing for a bit more comfort after night 3 of 4! There are bigger rooms available but we kept to a tight budget and there was limited options in the area for cheap accommodation. No WiFi. My hot links sim was able to get decent 4G but my partners U Mobile sim didn’t get anything.

Owner Howard is very involved, helps you with planning your days and a (much needed) shuttle service. Bed with mosquito net.

Common lounge area could do with some cleaning. Note that this location is very remote, no transportation options (bring your own if you can) and limited shops / restaurants (although the ones that are there are very nice)

Howard the owner is WONDERFUL. So helpful with great tips to find all the local hidden gems. Lovely to be surrounded by forest, great tower for watching sunrise. The local beaches are some of the best in the world and so quiet - felt like we had the whole peninsula to ourselves. Would recommend a car.
