Barrabup Sanctuary BirdHide

I loved the peaceful, secluded feel of the property - it was the perfect place to switch off and reconnect with nature. Waking up to the sounds of the bush and having a cosy, comfortable space to relax in made the stay feel really special. The accommodation was well-equipped and had everything we needed for our short stay. Being so close to some beautiful walking trails made it easy to get out and explore, and we were given a warm welcome and helpful directions by one of the owners and their dog, Ginger!

No complaints :) Just make sure you follow the instructions provided on email and signage to make locating the site easier on yourself.

Amazing stay at the birdhide! Will definitely be back! Easy to find with good signs, comfy bed! Lots of birds and animals! All up perfect!

The wood carvings on the track in were clever. The bed was comfortable and the room was ok, with some limitations. The shower and hot water were great. The semi enclosed raised verandah with outdoor lounge overlooking the river was a good feature and we saw some blue wrens during our stay.

The Booking.com post did not mention that it was a composting toilet (which was ok for us but may have upset others). There was also no mention of the 2k stretch of atrocious, very corrugated gravel that we needed to drive on to get to the accommodation. It wasn't a long way but the depth of the corrugations rivaled the Gibb, which we have been on a few times. The lighting the main room was very poor as it only had lights attached to the bed head and they were only able to be faced towards the wall they were near. The "kitchen" was a very poor description of that facility. The microwave, "tea/coffee" maker (a kettle), and toaster were crammed on top of the small bar fridge and the only place to prep food was a smallish dining table and the dishwashing facilities was a plastic bucket on the landing near the bathroom, which, to us, was unacceptable. The "stovetop" was a another very poor description. It was a BBQ with a hotplate and attached single Burner on the verandah. It would have been impossible to cook a meal on it using two pots. What sounded like an ideal location really wasn't. Yes, it was near the river but the surrounding bush were not that pleasant and there was a pile of sand, cement mixer and other building materials next the accommodation, from rock wall building, that should have been moved or at least covered. As you can see, we were very disappointed with many aspects of the accommodation and definitely would NOT book it again.

Non flushing toilet

The inclusion of glass screening to enclose parts of the open veranda, and the install of an air conditioner, were obvious and appreciated improvements. Outlook over the river is nice, but no way to get down to it safely as the dirt pathway is too steep and slippery.

This property is not maintained in so many ways. See photos of our comments in the Visitors' Book. I really don't know how or why other guests have not commented on the obvious ways this property is not maintained, especially in terms of essential safety requirements such as hygienic water use (even washing hands after toilet use, the one sink is supposed to serve every other water use as well like filling kettle, washing-up water, drinking water, etc), and fire prevention (fire extinguisher is empty, has no inspection tag, has the trigger lever taped down). Private swimming area? Cannot safely get down to or back up from the "private swimming area" on the Blackwood River as the embankment is very steep with a very narrow, rutted, slippery track. I saw no mention of the toilet being a drop-composting one. The towels looked clean, but did not smell fresh. The BBQ is full of grease and muck under the grills. NO kitchen, just kettle and toaster on top of microwave on top of bar fridge. PLUS, all the other things listed in the Visitors' Book photos. I would attach more photos, but seems I am limited to 4.

Have sent a email in regards to our stay. In conversation with a staff member, Jackie, she agreed the property that it was not clean. It was a last minute booking as she stated and she stated she would refund the money.

Cleanliness, outside clean up. Bed neatly made. Towels folded neatly. Overall neatness and cleanliness. Location lovely and staff were very accommodating. The price was a bit overly charged for what was shown on the advertisement.
