The Village Pension

Staying at The Village Pension was in and of itself one of the highlights of our two-week Romanian road trip (and we stayed in lots of wonderful accommodations throughout our journey)! We were a group of friends from the United States (South Carolina and Kentucky) and South Africa. The Village Pension is in a gorgeous, tranquil location along a creek in the heart of Breb. The location and ambiance could genuinely not be any better. Our host, Penny, was fantastic. Always cheerful, upbeat, and ready to help. She has a deep connection to this pension and to this part of Romania and spending time with her was an absolute joy. Penny arranged for a private dinner at a neighbor's house, a walking tour of Breb, and even arranged an affordable taxi to pick up two of my friends from the airport in Cluj-Napoca because their flight arrived a few days after mine (this was a wonderful suggestion on her part and afforded me the time to spend an extra day in Maramures rather than having to personally dive to Cluj to pick up my friends). Penny also has lots of suggestions on things to do and see in the area. Be sure to spend lots of time visiting both Maramures as a region and Breb, specifically. If I ever have friends coming on vacation to Romania, I will definitely encourage them to stay here. There is no other place like it and it is absolutely worth paying extra to stay here versus other accommodations, if possible. Thank you, again, for a wonderful stay!

It was a very cozy peaceful quite place in the middle of the village, in the heart of Maramureş, ideal for those who want to escape from the city or for those who want to experience a traditional rural Holiday in the mountains. Staff was very welcoming and friendly and helpful.

Lovely place in village Breb, where you can still enjoy in many traditions of the Maramures. The house we stayed in is a historic one with all the comfort we needed for our stay. There is a lot of space around the houses with nice green area with fireplaces, where you can relax and enjoy in peace. Dogs are allowed to be free (if properly behaved of course, because there are some chickens running around), which was a huge bonus for us with three dogs. The owner and the lady who helps her manage the place are both extremely nice and kind, and they make you feel very welcome. They genuinely care about the place, wanting to make it the best experience for their guests. Guests can also get various homemade products like cheese, bread, butter, or can ask for some eggs or homegrown veggies. Really everything you need for a special retreat in Breb.

Everything was great: we have been highly welcomed by the host. We particularly appreciated the renovation of the typical house. The location was very nice. It was also really nice to receive fresh local products for the breakfast.

The minute we arrived at the Village Hotel we knew this was a very special place. The buildings are thoughfully restored and furnished for an authentic Maramures experience. Host Penny and Manager Andrara are so welcoming. Penny set us up with our wonderful guide Talida, a traditional dinner with a local family and took us to the sheepstation to experience the milking of the sheep. It was an unforgettable experience staying at the Village Hotel.

Old traditional wooden house in a romantic setting surrounded by trees and fields with modern amenities. Very clean, quiet and comfortable. Penny and Andrada were the kindest hostesses I have met in Romania, really took excellent care of us and provided us with a home away from home.

This place is exceptional. The location, the ambiance, the esthetics - all top notch We walked around the village to check on other accommodations - this one hands down is the best. Facilities are a bit rustic, but so is Maramures You don't need to look for ethnographic museum, you are staying in one. Host is amazing and very knowledgeable in all local affairs and itineraries Highly recommended

Our stay was too short

This was our favorite accommodation during 2 weeks in Romania! Exactly as the photos and reviews expressed. It was so relaxing!!! Once we settled in, our hostess Andrada made excellent recommendations. Day one, we strolled through the village then experienced a delicious dinner served at a home in Breb. Second day we explored Merry Cemetery, Museum of Victims of Communism and Barsana Monastery. The evening was magical as we relaxed on the wooden swing, cooked dinner in the tiny, well equipped kitchen and enjoyed a campfire. We were delighted when a family was grazing their sheep in the adjoining field. Such fun watching the children play with our small dog!

We're seniors so had to be careful with the staircase, low beams and raised thresholds. These authentic features also added to the experience:)
