Tea and Experience Factory - Thema Collection

We had a truly different and memorable stay at The Tea & Experience Factory by Thema. Being surrounded by the beautiful Kabaragala Estate and endless tea bushes made the entire experience feel peaceful and special. The tea factory experience they offer was amazing and very detailed. The person who explained everything was incredibly kind, friendly, and knowledgeable, which made the tour even more enjoyable and interesting. The rooms were lovely with a nice ambience, and overall the stay was very comfortable. The food was also very good and added to the pleasant experience. The only thing to be aware of is the road leading to the hotel. It is a narrow mountain road with some broken sections, so it requires a careful and experienced driver. If you are travelling by car, you need to be cautious, but if you are using an SUV, it should be much easier. Overall, it was a wonderful and unique stay, and a very special experience for anyone who loves nature and tea.

Nested among the mist-kissed mountains covered in greenery and the lush tea plantations, the hotel showcases a magnificent outlook which soothes your eyes and relaxes your mind. Even before the journey started, Vinoth was very helpful, giving out directions and arranging the shuttle to take us to the hotel from where we parked our vehicle. Upon setting foot at the hotel, an exceptional and warm traditional welcome was given by the staff. A special appreciation goes out to Mr. Kumara, the Hotel Manager who ensured that all our requirements were fulfilled, guaranteeing that we had a lovely stay. Our heartfelt thank you goes out to Mr. Kumara and the chef, for going the extra mile to prepare separate food items for my two little picky eaters and also the restaurant staff for being very helpful and accomodating. A note of appreciation goes out to the Naturalist, who was exceptional at performing his duties by disseminating his wealth of knowledge in guiding us through the excursions and the leaf-to-cup experience at the tea factory operating within the hotel. The rooms were spacious and neatly arranged with clean linen which illustrated a homely appearance which made the stay extra pleasant. All in all, the stay at the Tea and Experience Factory by Thema Collection was a fantastic and relaxing experience that would linger in our minds long after departure, and one that should be savoured by anyone who wishes to experience a tranquil getaway.

After a long drive on a narrow and broken road, clinging to a mountainside for much of the last few kms, constantly having to reverse to find a wide spot so oncoming vehicles can pass, it's like a vision when you turn the last corner and see the beautifully-restored tea factory glistening white in the midst of electric-green tea estates. Sri Lanka's highest mountains surround you on every side. The rooms are spacious, and fortunately I was given a corner room with cross-ventilation because there's no A/C. The decor is a bit Ikea-modern, using the corrugated tin walls and old tea boxes as design elements, but pleasing and comfortable overall. The pool area is beautiful. The staff is helpful and professional, although not quite as warm and friendly as I experienced at other Thema properties. Special praise to Vinoth, the front desk manager, who looked after my requests and accommodated me one evening in dining a la carte, when I wanted something light rather than the standard buffet of over-indulgence. Very special praise to Lakshan, the activities director, who leads treks to Kabaragala Falls and gives the most informative tea demonstration that I've experienced anywhere in Sri Lanka. And thanks also to the general manager, who gifted me a box of fine Thema BOPF tea on checkout.

The setting is spectacular, if remote and hard to get to. Once you're there, you depend on the property for everything. But tea-picking expeditions, waterfall treks, afternoon tea socials, and pool time make the days feel full. I had stayed at another Thema property, the Scottish Planter's (Glendevon) Bungalow near Ragala, for the 2 nights prior to my 2-night stay at TEFM. That property was absolutely perfect in every way, capturing the atmospherics, grace and beauty of a bygone era, and offering a world-class chef. So it was perhaps inevitable that TEFM would fall slightly short of my heightened expectations after visiting Glendevon (TEFM is a 16-room property, whereas Glendevon has only 4 rooms). So it's a different experience in every way, but no less enjoyable.

We stayed for two nights (16th & 17th April 2026) at **Hotel Tea and Experience**, and it was a truly pleasant and memorable stay. The family room was very spacious, spotlessly clean, and well maintained. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We enjoyed buffet meals for all three meals each day, and the food was delicious with a good variety to suit different tastes. The naturalist who guided us on the trek to Kabaragala Ella was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable, which greatly enhanced the experience. The mini tea factory tour within the hotel building was a novel and educational experience, adding a unique touch to the stay. A special mention to Kumara, the manager, who was very kind, approachable, and ensured everything ran smoothly. Waking up early to watch the breathtaking sunrise is a must—it was absolutely beautiful. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who hasn’t visited Mandaram Nuwara. From the moment we arrived, everything was thoughtfully curated, creating a perfect blend of comfort, authenticity, and relaxation. The service was truly exceptional. A special thank you to Vinoth and his team for their warm hospitality and attention to detail. They went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable, always attentive yet never intrusive. The entire experience from the surroundings to the service was simply outstanding. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a unique an8d memorable getaway in Sri Lanka.

Cet hôtel a une vue incroyable dans un climat tempéré et paisible L’équipe est incroyable et le bâtiment a été parfaitement refait pour garder l’authenticité du lieu, mais avoir tout de même un luxe incroyable pour chaque chambre et commodité Mention spéciale pour le chef de la cuisine qui prépare des plats incroyables ! La visite et les explications de la cueillette jusqu’à la production du thé était vraiment très intéressante. Notre Guide avait réponse à toutes les questions et c’était très facile pour nous de comprendre tout ce qu’il nous expliquait. Merci encore pour votre accueil

Всё прекрасно и интересно. Дорога в отель - серпантин в гору, выды открываются фантастические. Отель среди чайных плантаций. Двор ухожен, с цветочными клумбами. Есть мини-бассейн, оборудован шезлонгами. При встрече проводят небольшой обряд приветствия/очищения с благовониями (пару минут). Предлагают чай с тарелочкой мини-брускетт, печенья, кексов (англ. five o’clock). В номере приветственная фруктовая тарелка, фрукты уже порезаны, столовые приборы расставлены. Номер был угловой на втором этаже с окнами по двум стенам. На окнах ставни. Светло. Места достаточно и в жилой комнате и в ванной комнате (с душем, туалетом, двумя раковинами). Кровать с балдахином. Мебель комфортная, обстановка уютная, есть камин электро-паровой (в т.ч. для обогрева используется). Халаты и тапочки есть. Спрей от насекомых тоже выдают. Двери в номер и ключи необычные, как в помещения - хранилища фабрики. Слышимость из других номеров отсутствует благодаря промежуточной комнате между номерами. С улицы звуки слышны хорошо, но в целом не мешают. В коридоре летают птицы и строят гнёзда под крышей (но мусора на полу нет). Цветы в вазах расставлены, детские рисунки о фабрике в рамках на стенах. В ресторане на первом этаже подают завтрак и ужин по меню, выбор блюд и к какому времени приготовить спрашивают заранее. В ресторане сохранены некоторые производственные объекты фабрики. Блюда вкусные, сытные. Чистота и порядок во всём. Персонал вежлив, доброжелателен, очень приветлив и отзывчив, рад гостям. Утром проводят экскурсии по чайной фабрике (бесплатно), рассказывают и показывают процесс приготовления листьев чая на действующем оборудовании старинной фабрики, есть дегустация и сбор чая на склонах. При отъезде вручают коробочку вкусного чая с плантаций. Отель осуществляет бесплатный трансфер вниз по склону на специально оборудованных машинах до площадки, более удобной для современных авто (и вверх до отеля тоже).
