"Best tea experience in Sri Lanka"

10.0

If you want to experience how a traditional Singalese tea factory work and visit and astonishing tea plantation sourranded by the tallest mountains in Sri Lanka, then this is your hotel. They transformed 6 years ago a typical tea factory into a cozy and singular luxury hotel. Their rooms, staff, amenities and views are amazing and you'll feel like being in the middle of nature, but with all the comforts of a luxury hotel. Plus, the food is perfectly made by tourists taste and the staff is servicial and friendly. We want to specially thank Lakshan for the trekking around the property and the visit to the tea factory. Moreover, we want to thank all the hotel staff and we strobgly recommend every tourist coming to this area to stay in this hotel.

"A Perfect Escape from the Daily Grid"

10.0

We booked the entire property for our annual team outing. The team was incredibly flexible and friendly, maintaining proactive communication to ensure our smooth arrival. Safe parking for our bus was arranged, and the requested safari Jeeps were ready on time—no delays whatsoever. We were welcomed with a warm traditional greeting and a delightful cinnamon tea, unique to the property. The culinary experience was a highlight: a simple yet authentic five-course menu served with high-standard restaurant service and varieties of snacks provided for tea time. Rooms were spacious, clean and well-equipped with all necessary amenities, including sanitary kits. The location itself is breathtaking—an ideal escape into nature. We explored two nearby waterfalls with the guidance of a knowledgeable naturalist who enriched the experience with insightful commentary. The tea factory tour was fascinating, showcasing the full production process, although we missed tea plucking due to weather. A special thanks to Vinod, Anuhas, the restaurant manager (whose name escapes us)and Thilan, who made the stay and the process more convenient from the point of reservation, and the entire team for their outstanding hospitality. If you are a tea lover their cinnamon tea is a must-try available to buy at a reasonable price. All in all, this was an unforgettable experience—absolutely worth every moment. "A Delightful Team Outing at Tea & Experience Factory Thema Collection"

8.0

My colleagues and I recently visited the Tea & Experience Factory Thema Collection in Mandaramnuwara in September for our annual office team outing — and it turned out to be an excellent choice! From start to finish, the experience was both enriching and thoroughly enjoyable. Ambience & Setting: The location is picturesque, surrounded by lush greenery and tea estates — it’s instantly relaxing and perfect for a group wanting to escape the usual office environment. The natural beauty of the surroundings added so much to the mood; walking through the gardens and seeing the tea bushes was simply tranquil. Activities & Experiences: The guided tour of the factory was very informative. We learned about the tea production process — from growing, picking, processing, to tasting. The staff explained everything in a clear, engaging way. The tea tasting session was a definite highlight. Trying different varieties, smelling the aromas, comparing flavours — it was both fun and educational. Service & Staff: The staff were warm, friendly and very professional. They handled our large group with impressive coordination, ensuring everyone was included. They were happy to answer our questions, and their passion for what they do shone through. The refreshments and snacks provided were delightful and complemented the tea tasting very nicely. Food & Refreshments: We had a light lunch/snacks (adjust based on what was provided) and the quality was very good. The flavours were fresh, local ingredients, and it fit well with the tea-experience theme. Pairing food with the different teas made the outing feel even more special. Overall Value: For the price, we felt it was excellent value. It’s more than just a tea factory — it’s an immersive experience that combines nature, education, relaxation, and team bonding. Everyone in our group left feeling refreshed and happy.

"Breathtaking views, rough road, cozy stay & warm staff. Loved the sunrise, tea tour & peaceful mountain escape."

8.0

“Tea & Experience Factory — Thema Collection, Mandaramnuwara ★ ★ ★ ☆ (3.5–4 / 5) Nestled high in the misty hills of Mandaramnuwara, this converted tea factory offers a unique escape from the ordinary. If you go in with the right expectations, it can be quite magical — but there are trade-offs. Below is a full account of my stay and what you should know if you plan to visit. --- 📍 Getting There & First Impressions Road & access: The route to the hotel is rough and at times precarious. Parts of the road are currently under construction, some stretches damaged, and many segments quite steep. You’ll want a vehicle with decent ground clearance — a regular sedan might struggle. Some guests even report scraping the undercarriage on bumps or uneven patches. Early in the drive you’ll pass a few Y-junctions with poor or nonexistent signage. One of the best decisions we made was calling the property ahead and asking that staff guide us (via call) for those final turns. This is almost essential unless you know the terrain. Several past guests noted that taxis / cars cannot always go the full way up: you may have to park lower down and use the hotel’s transfer or 4×4 for the last bit. The journey itself takes longer than maps suggest once you factor in slow, rough patches. It’s better to travel during daylight. Despite the rough access, once you approach the estate, the scenery opens up: tea fields, misty valleys, softly rolling green hills. The first glimpse of the property is striking. --- 🏨 Rooms & Facilities Accommodation & design: The rooms are styled in a factory-industrial aesthetic blended with comfort. Unique furniture, interesting touches, and “rooms that reflect the building’s former life” are often praised. Cleanliness is generally rated high by guests. However — soundproofing is weak. Neighbors’ voices, footsteps, children running, or early morning noises have woken many guests. In one review, guests complained they heard snoring, conversations and walking early. The hotel reportedly has around 13 rooms. Some sources say if occupancy is low, meals may shift from full buffet style to set menus. Common amenities include: outdoor pool (not heated) , a pool table / billiards , garden & terrace areas, lounge spaces, and free WiFi in rooms. There is an in-house spa (T-Spa) listed on some hotel amenity lists. The property maintains a small gift / shop corner where you can buy their tea, soaps, vegetables, and local products. (You’ll often see this in guest remarks.) Pros / Cons to note: Pro: The design, rustic charm, and authenticity get praise. Con: Thin walls → noise intrusion. Con: The pool is unheated, which means on cooler nights it’s not very comfortable. Con: Some common areas (in certain reviews) were restricted during times, or guests were relocated to less comfortable areas when trying to hang out (e.g. being told not to sit in the garden). --- 🍴 Dining & Food What’s good: You typically get a complimentary tea on arrival or checkout, as part of the “leaf to cup” experience. The factory tour and tea sessions are a highlight — you pluck leaves, see them processed, and taste the outcome. Guests frequently call this one of the best parts of the stay. Meals are described in many reviews as fresh, flavorful, varied. Guests say breakfast, lunch, and dinner often include Sri Lankan and Western options. Some guests say the food is “delicious,” “quality,” and “well prepared.” What could be better: Portions: some guests, including in my own experience, found that certain dishes were small or insufficient. Variety / menu planning: The mix of cuisines at times felt unfocused (e.g. being asked to choose between pasta, rice, curry, etc.). Consistency: A few reviews mention occasional food quality issues. One reviewer described a dessert jelly as stale; another flagged an odd smell in the dining area one evening. Communication & staff training: Some delays and miscommunications happened during service — ordering, serving, or clarifying menu items. Buffet vs set menu: On quieter nights, the full buffet might not be available, so guests get a fixed menu. If you go expecting a buffet every night, check ahead. In short: the food is acceptable, occasionally good, but not flawless — it’s part of the charm, but don’t expect ultra-fine dining. --- 🌄 Activities, Surroundings & Extras Tea & Factory Tour: This is a major draw. Guests love the “leaf to cup” process — plucking tea leaves, watching processing, tasting fresh brews. Waterfalls & Trails: You can request a 4×4 jeep (for additional cost) to visit nearby waterfalls such as Kabara Gala Fall or Hamal Ella. Several guests recommend hiking to Elamulla waterfall (about 7 km round trip) — they say the hike is well worth it. Naturalists on staff (or guides associated with the hotel) often accompany you, point out endemic birds, flora, and local wildlife. These guides tend to be praised as friendly and knowledgeable. Sunrise & Sunset Views: Almost universally, guests recommend waking early or staying up to watch the sunrise and sunset. The play of mist, tea hills, and soft light is often described as magical. Leisure & Common Areas: The outdoor pool (though not heated) is a nice spot to relax — on warmer midday sun hours it can be enjoyable. The pool table / billiards hall is a fun diversion in the evenings. Gardens, terraces, lounge areas offer serene corners to unwind. The property may host high tea sessions (evening tea + snacks) for guests, enhancing the thematic experience. Some guests have mentioned restricted access to certain common areas at times — one review specifically said they were told not to sit in the garden or asked to move to the "engine room" when dining space was rearranged. --- ✅ Overall Take & Advice Tea & Experience Factory is less about luxury perfection and more about immersive experience. It’s a stay for those who prioritize atmosphere, nature, tea culture, and memorable settings over flawless service or ultra-comfort. Strengths: Exceptional views, misty ambiance, and quiet escape Unique tea tours and factory experience Warm, friendly staff in many reviews Great for photography, nature lovers, families wanting a change from city hotels Access to walking trails and waterfalls (with the right transport) Cautions: Be prepared for road conditions: call ahead, plan for extra time, use a high clearance / 4×4 vehicle Rooms are not soundproof; light sleepers may struggle The pool is unheated — pleasant only under the right weather Food service may have gaps; menu changes if occupancy is low Some service inconsistencies and communication issues were noticed by guests Common area access may not always be seamless If I were to return, I’d: Arrive in daylight Use the hotel’s recommended transport for the final stretch Ask ahead whether meals will be buffet or set menu Choose a room at the top / with best views Bring earplugs (just in case) Plan excursions (waterfalls, trails) in advance with the hotel Don’t rush — spend time watching dawn/dusk

"Beautiful location and amazing service."

9.0

The food is amazing, it was delicious! The access to the hotel is quite an adventure but once there it is beautiful.

When we were there the weather was rainy and quite cold with lot of wind. In the rooms, it was a bit cold and mostly noisy because of the wind and the air was able to pass through the walls.

"Interesting experience in a converted tea factory."

8.0

This was a unique and interesting experience in the old tea factory. The design of the rooms was interesting and based on the building’s previous life as a factory, although it was not always practical e.g. no soundproofing. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and helped us with a number of things during our brief stay. We enjoyed the tour of the factory and lunch was tasty. If you are a light sleeper, earplugs would be essential, the wind sounded like it was going to lift the roof at one point. The room amenities were good and we enjoyed being able to sit by the electric fire when it was cold and wet outside.

"Tea factory and unique village experience"

10.0

This 1870s tea factory is a must visit. It is hidden in the misty mountains of Mandaram Nuwara, a hidden gem of a village. Whilst everyone goes to Nuwara eliya and such cities, giving Mandaram Nuwara a visit is special and unique. Vinoth at the front desk and All staff are very welcoming and helpful. The naturalist, Lakshan, is very knowledgeable and told us many things about this special village during our stay.
