Smiley's Homestay

Cecilia and Smiley run a fantastic homestay in Berastagi. From the moment you arrive, you are welcomed with warmth and kindness, making you feel right at home. The food alone is worth staying for—Cecilia is an incredible cook, and her pancakes with fresh strawberries are an all-time favorite of our daughter. Smiley is the perfect guide, with extensive knowledge of the area, ensuring you discover the best spots. On top of that, Cecilia was invaluable when we lost our credit card. We only realized it was missing after we had already reached Prapat, but thanks to her efforts, we got it back. What a wonderful place and such kind, amazing people! We highly recommend this homestay.

We stayed at Smiley‘s Homestay for one night and had a very good time! The breakfast was amazing and we did a wonderful sunrise trek to Mount Sibayak with Prima and Agus - such sweet people!! Thank you for our amazing stay, we would definitely come back 🙏

Smiley’s is a great place to stay in Berastagi - far enough away from the bustle of the town but close enough to do the volcano hike independently. My room was not in the main part of Smiley’s but a short walk back up the hill - in a separate building. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. It was quiet at night and I slept like a baby. I did not meet Smiley, but I did meet his wife Cecilia - who was extremely kind and helpful. She gave me lots of information about Kopi Luwak, which she harvests near the guesthouse. She also arranged my transport to Lake Toba. The accommodation is a great choice if you ever find yourself in Berastagi.

It would have been lovely to get a hot shower but that does not appear to be any option in most places in Sumatra.

The couple Smiley and Cecelia are great hosts. They helped us plan our itinerary and Cecelia's meals are simply sumptious. We sat at a common dining table and interacted with other guests as well as the hosts themselves and had some good laughs.

The bed is comfy, location quite near to town. Just 10-15 minutes walk.

The staff hard to get in. When you wanna check in or check out, better tell them the time. I was waiting so long to check in and check out. No people in reception
