Smiley's Homestay

Smileys is a great place to stay in Brastagi. It is 10 minutes out of the bustle of the town and on the hill which is a beautiful place to walk up in the mornings. There are cafes and warungs nearby and it’s a good starting point for the trek up the volcano if you want to do it on your own. The owners of Smileys are the nicest people. I was a little sick and Cecilia made me fresh ginger tea and was so caring. Smiley and Cecelia both speak great English and know everything about the area and beyond. They quickly arranged a car and driver to the airport for me when the road was cut off by a landslide!

The room is a little dim but it’s quite acceptable and comfortable

Smiley was an amazing host! We only stayed for one night, to do Mount Sibayak sunrise hike. We also arranged airport pickup through SMILEY'S and he helped us to book a driver and waterfall tour for the next part of the trip. Our breakfast was also amazing, loads of fruits and yummy cinnamon pancakes. Thank you SMILEY'S 🙏

Smiley and his family are really friendly, gave good suggestions on what to do in the region and the sunrise tour to Mount Sibayak was fantastic! The breakfast and supper were really good and a lot of variation! Terimah kasih. Kind regards.

Everything was good!

Owners are very nice and speak good English. We had a shared room which was spacious and had a good warm shower. Good food and nice location. Owners helpful and let us rent their motorbike.

Breakfast was the most expensive meal we had in Sumatra, but we should’ve asked price before ordering. And lots of mold, like a lot.. but the price is low.

I don’t know where to begin….should have had at least 3 nights, sadly only two. Loved this place. Loved Betastagi. Smiley and his wife were fantastic hosts. Sort as many transfers etc..out as you can directly with Smiley as he gets a much better price. Smiley led our sunrise tour up the volcano. It was an experience I’ll never forget, he dealt with a grumpy teenager who didn’t feel well unbelievably well…gently encouraging and joking with her! He is a natural story teller, taking you on little journeys of his life even the teenagers were transfixed by….in a digital world this is rare and a pure joy. He takes time to share fantastic places on route. The hot springs afterwards was fabulous. Our room was basic but extremely comfortable - best night sleeps on our journey so far. A massive thank you to our hosts…I was just sad not to be able to do your cooking course as it looked amazing and we would have all loved it. Next time.

Smiley was very helpfull and gave us good advice on planning our trip. He also booked the nightbus for us and kept in touch with us via WhatsApp to inform if we were okay and could be of assistance. Tophost! The breakfast was excellent.

I’d stay at this homestay for Smiley and Cecilia alone - Smiley, what a character who’s bursting with energy and Cecilia, always so sweet and accommodating. I did the sunrise Sibayak tour with Smiley and enjoyed it loads
