Tianyi Homestay

The stay was amazing, and the family is very friendly and will do everything to make your stay comfortable! The room was cozy and had two big king-size beds. There were enough outlets to charge your phones and power banks. The bathroom was good and had a nice shower. The common area was pleasant, with tables inside to sit at, and there was also an outdoor area with a roof where we had breakfast and tea. The lady of the homestay made breakfast for us every day, which was served between 08:00 and 09:30. Good to know is that the owners do not speak English very well, but this is not something you can really expect in this area. Please bring your phone for translation. Also, bring cash since you cannot pay by card. Regarding the area around the homestay, the village of Shizhao is about a 10-minute walk downhill. There, you can find some restaurants and convenience stores (7-Eleven and Hi-Life). The restaurants close early, so make sure to eat around 17:30–18:00. There is also a local grocery store where you can buy some fruit. We took the Alishan railway train from Chiayi to Fenqihu, and from there it was a 15-minute bus ride to the homestay. We also went to Alishan National Park by bus. The owners were kind enough to drop us off at the station for the tourist shuttle bus. The park itself was okay, but not as nice as the trails around the homestay. We first took the Sakura Trail, then the Sunrise Trail and Tea Trail up to 1,699 meters, and then went down again via the Cloud Trail. In our experience, this was much nicer than the more touristy Alishan Park. They also have a very friendly three-legged dog named “OK” who accompanied us on the 12-kilometre hike we did.

The host is lovely and picked us up from the local bus stop as we had luggage and were travelling with 2 young kids. She even dropped us off to a nearby local trail which was greatly appreciated. The room was comfortable and clean, though a bit dated. We were served tea a few times during our visit which was lovely and served breakfast in the mornings. The location is reasonably convenient for the area in that it was close to bus stops and eateries and there are some nearby walking trails. Would recommend staying here.

Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with this accommodation. Sadly, it appears they are more focused on making money than anything else. The positive thing was when we arrived and having booked two nights, I told her immediately that I would only want to stay one night because it was nothing like what we expected all the photographs. She agreed to one night only after quite a bit of haggling. We didn’t feel that the rooms have been properly cleaned let alone the bedsheets. It’s far away from the village. You cannot walk at night to get something to eat. The town is not very nice. Either the highlight was the forest.

Everything - shabby - dirty and run down. No heating in the rooms. It was cold. She offered blankets, which was a dirty old duvet from a previous overnight.

Hosts were super friendly, offering to drive us around as we didn’t drive. Super friendly pets as well :) Hosts were extremely hospitable, introducing us to the surrounding offerings including a special coffee visit at one of their friends’ place. Added bonus was the free flow tea that they kept offering which was extremely delicious and yummy :))

Location was close to public transport, shops and restaurants and easy to get to. It was near a lot of great walking trails.
