Freedom Lodge, Kandy

This is an amazing old house in a great part of town near the lake. The host has lived here for many decades, and it really feels like an intimate homestay in spite of the several rooms. The room was large and lovely, with a beautiful view over the hillside. It is not luxurious, but really comfortable and full of character, and the included breakfast was very good as well. Good points: Extremely comfortable and good value, and great location. Bad points: Quite spartan and old fashioned in style and furnishing. We loved it but maybe not to everyone's taste.

We rented two rooms, both of which were spacious and had balconies - the deluxe double room was particularly generous. The building itself is set in an attractive garden area and is a short distance from the lake. The location is very convenient, not requiring tuktuks to get into the centre. It’s about a 20 minute walk around the lake (in either direction) to reach the centre - we enjoyed walking round the shore at different times of the day looking at the wide variety of wildlife (water monitors, terrapins, kingfishers, pelicans etc). The owner, Sarath, is an exceptional host. We enjoyed our conversations and the kindness, help and consideration he showed in all our arrangements (he even phoned us before we were due to arrive to warn us about a train strike which would disrupt our travel plans). Breakfasts were excellent, and had varied Sri Lankan dishes, and we also enjoyed a traditional dinner prepared by the family. Sarath also helped with booking tickets for a traditional dancing show and was able to take us to see local sites outside Kandy and provide onward transport.

The owner and particularly Sri the "house boy" were lovely people. Kind and accommodating. Lovely big house with many areas for sitting. Beautiful garden. Easy stroll to the lake. Lovely ample breakfast. Peaceful location, away from the noise of the city..

Freedom Lodge was such a lovely experience. The family are so welcoming and helpful. They had family visitors staying and encouraged us to have breakfast with them. We eere able to sample a variety of Sri Lankan foods.We learnt so much about Sri Lanka from them and are very grateful for their hospitality.

I really can't think of anything!!

Sarath and Nalini were wonderful hosts! Everyone in Srilanka is nice but their hospitality was best we experienced on our trip to Srilanka. They gave us helpful tips. The room was clean and quiet. The breakfast was great and plentiful.
