Walmgate Cottage

The location was excellent, literally had all the shops, amenities and attractions on the door step. The cottage is very quirky and welcoming from the first time you walk in, each room has character and charm.

Superb location. Loved York. Clean, warm, quirky.

Confusion over cancellation date meant we could not pull out when we needed to - admittedly my misreading, but there seemed to be no consideration (and we later found it was a very busy weekend in York, so a new booking would have been easy for the hosts to find). Definitely was not value for money. Sloping floors and bed took some getting used to.

Perfect location, 2 minutes from the Shambles. Private and quiet. Cosy living room and spacious, attractive kitchen dining.

We searched for basic kitchen utensils that weren't there - a fish slice, a slotted spoon, a ladle. The wooden blinds on the windows need lifting so that the sills and frames can be cleaned, especially in the bathroom. We didn't like the sloping beds, we all had problems with sliding sideways that affected our quality of sleep. If I came again I'd bring some blocks to put under one side. The directions from Stays York were incorrect- building number for Walmgate apartments, and the name of the restaurant opposite. Fortunately the photos helped us find it.

Location was perfect for walking into the city. The cottage was warm and comfortable and had adequate facilities. It was surprisingly fairly quiet late at night, which was great as, being near to lively clubs and restaurants we thought it might be more noisy.

We could not park near the cottage, we had to park quite a few roads away due to no spaces nearby. The steps down from the main house are not lit after dark and were slippery in the wet. As we are elderly we found the steps rather difficult to negotiate. You could do well to fix a light there as it could be dangerous.

Could do with a little more lighting outside

Location, town centre. Typical old house with its pros and cons.

Cleaning should be improved (frequency, accuracy). Overall, the pictures looked better (more polished, brighter).

Such a gorgeous cottage, so close to the heart of York and the Shambles. Would highly recommend.

The floors were pretty uneven, but other than that I can’t fault it. One light didn’t work, but the team were responsive.
