Zayali Bacalar

Very welcoming, lovely family who let us try some of their salsa picante (hot sauce) - delicious! The kitchen had everything we needed and the garden/pool area was really great and felt very homely. Our room was spacious, bed very comfortable, AC worked perfectly and the shower pressure was a great! We highly recommend staying at Zayali :) We hired bikes and could get around very easily, otherwise it's a 15 min walk to the main square.

Not much- I left after one night.

In no way is the accommodation a “hotel”. This is the most basic of home stays- with zero separation between guests and the family. The “reception area” was their living room and stank of cat piss. The room was just off the living room without an exterior window and had the bare minimum of necessities. The room had signs of water damage- the bathroom door was especially damaged and they had cups of moisture absorbing chemicals placed in the room. I spilled some of the chemicals on myself shortly after arriving not realizing what it was and why it was there. While the mattress appeared new the bed was missing a top sheet and only offered a cotton blanket to sleep under. I used it with great reluctance since there was no way to tell when it had been washed last. The kitchen was outdoors and open to any and all critters that care to visit- while the food is kept covered, the sink was full of dirty dishes that I’m sure provided a feast once the lights were out. The family makes no effort to distance themselves from the guests and are using the house as their home- which they have every right to unless they advertise themselves as a “hotel”, which sets different standards of cleanliness, sanitation and privacy, and expect people to pay for the questionable privilege of staying.

Our stay was excellent! From the breakfast to the hospitality from the entire family. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful/ They go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We really enjoyed the open shared spaces. We met other travelers and had a great time exchanging stories.

Staff was very hospitable and friendly.

Reception was not always staffed. The second room we had was a bit too bright.

Two separate beds with enough space to move around room. Outside was a table and two chairs plus a hammock.

Swimming pool was just to sit down in and not to swim.

We loved our stay at Zayali, the place is very homely, comfortable and offers calm environment to relax. The kitchen was well equipped and we really enjoyed cooking in the open space. The garden is great, lots of plants everywhere and plenty of sitting area. We love all their pets too, Luna, Mini, Negrita and Tequila! The owners were super friendly and helpful and we loved getting to know them. Our room was comfortable with plenty of space to put our stuff and to relax after a long day out. Thank you for everything, we would definitely come back 100%. Some comments about hotels in this area say that's it's far away from the center or it feel unsafe at night. This was not true for us. The walk to town was quick and the area feels very suburban, home to friendly families. We never felt unsafe walking at night.

The only small thing we didn't like is that the first room we stayed in didn't have a window facing outside but this might not be a problem for some.
