"Fallen from its glory, but still alright"

8.0

The design of the place is unique and gives a true rainforest feel. The staff is friendly and the food at the restaurant is tasty, even if there is always some waiting time involved.

To us, it seems this place has fallen from its glory compared to former reviews and recommendations (Lonely Planet). It's still a decent place to stay but provided with the opportunity, I'd choose differently for the following reasons: Our room had no mosquito-net, which in itself wouldn't be a huge deal, but there were no nets in front of the openings in the walls either. Outside and inside were basically the same, even when none of the windows can be openend. So when you're worried about mosquito bites, definitely bring your own net. Another thing that bothered us (and could easily be fixed) was the missing curtain in the back window. The next house was really close and people could see everything that was going on inside our room. The restaurant is nice, but plan for at least half an hour waiting time. When we ate there, I got a different dish than I had ordered (was still good) and the table next to us was waiting for their side dishes long after they had finished their meals. As for the reviews mentioning problems with being thrown out or refused a room when booking with another agency: I was worried about this, since I did book our trek ahead. When I messaged the guest house about it, they didn't reply. And indeed, when we arrived we were asked about the agency we had booked our trek with. Lucky for us, I seemed to have booked with a local agency the guy at the reception deemed okay. He explained that a lot of western agencies are taking over the town, and he does not appreciate it. Understandable, but if it leads to guests being refused their booking, it might be an idea to put it out there somewhere. If you read that far and are still looking for an agency to book your trek with: I recommend local-guides.org and if you are in town, do book the cooking class with them as well. We really had the best of experiences with them and it made up for the slightly bumpy stay at Rain Forest.

"Greats stay, highly recommend!"

9.0

This place is an amazing getaway, one can stay there for a few days and relax. The staff is very friendly, funny and caring. I loved being there, I felt very welcome. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The beds were comfortable, there was no mosquito net, but there are really few mosquitos anyway. It was nice to sit in a hammock or on a sunlounger by the river and just chill out, read a book and enjoy the view.

The 2-day-trek we booked with them itself was amazing. But I had the feeling they forgot we booked a trek so we didn’t have a certified guide and had to wait for 45 minutes for someone they organized to start our adventure with. So our tour through the jungle, although it was amazing and the guy tried his best wasn’t filled with a lot of explanations or information due to our guide not being able to communicate in English that well and probably lacking the necessary knowledge of flora and fauna. We were passing by other tours and we had some sort of comparison of what a trek from Bukit Lawang through Gunung Leuser potentially could be like. Again, he was very very nice, helped where he could and took great care in accommodating our needs but for the money we payed I would have liked to have some more information during the trek.

"We enjoyed our stay at Rainforest"

8.0

The staff were very nice and helpful. My husband loved the chicken burgers and overall we were very happy with the quality of the food. It’s a family orientated guest house and the badminton court is a bonus for kids.

The bed was comfortable but squeaky. It would be good to have a few clothes hangars.
