"Blessed!"

10.0

Centrally located. Only a few minutes’ walk from Mitake Station. It’s just right beside the Tama River where you can hear the sounds of the flowing river. Can be quite loud if you are not used to it but if you close the doors, it’s ok. Sounds like rain. Tetsuji-San and Yoko-San kept the place very clean and although it was our first time sleeping on mattresses on tatami floor, we slept really well! There is a bathroom/toilet attached to the room so there is privacy. Bath towels not provided (but face towels are) but no issue as you can rent them for 100yen per pax). It was off peak season and we were the only guests staying at that time. The couple don’t speak much English but they were game to use technology (Google translate) to try and communicate with us. Kudos to their can-do attitude! They allowed us to keep our luggage earlier at the guesthouse before the check-in time of 3pm and also after check-out time of 10am the next day so that we could explore more of Okutama before heading back to Tokyo. They served us a wonderful Jap breakfast (1000yen per pax) at their balcony overlooking the rushing river which we enjoyed so much. Wish we had stayed for one more night. This is an experience which we would remember for a long time. Thank you Tetsuji and Yoko-San for your wonderful hosting! Hope to bring the rest of my family to stay at your guest house one day! God bless you!

"Breathtaking scenery and beautiful hosts!"

10.0

This property was surrounded by breathtaking nature and the sounds of the rushing river below. It was so peaceful, the air and water were very refreshing and clean. The traditional Japanese style room and breakfast was a great experience but above all, the hosts were the best. They were super friendly and accommodating from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. We travelled with a baby and they helped us in many ways that I am so grateful for! We also loved their very friendly cats. The only regret is that we didn’t stay longer!

Only thing we needed to be careful of was the steep stairs with baby but it’s like this in many properties in Japan~ nonetheless, something to be mindful of if stairs are a worry for you.

The hosts are a very lovely elderly couple who hosted us with great warmth and hospitality. We felt so at home, even though if we communicated via the Google Translator (this is totally viable)! The room is very cozy and has a magnificent view on the Tama River down below. We definitely recommend to take the breakfast option: it is a traditional Japanese breakfast prepared by the hosts, it was very delicious. They have two cute cats, which visit while you eat. We regret staying only for two days!

"My new happy place"

10.0

Tetsuji and Yoko were amazing hosts! They were the kindest couple! The sleeping rooms were beautiful with tatami mat floors and rice paper screens. We went in the winter, so it was a bit cold, but the room comes with a kotatsu table (low table with a built in heater and blanket) and it was amazingly cozy. The view from the room is also incredible, overlooking a ravine with a rushing river. In the morning the made us a delicious breakfast of rice, soup, salted fish, mountain yam and an assortment of other goodies for only ¥1000! They have cats on premise, fyi if you’re allergic, they were only with us at breakfast (obviously not in our rooms) but they are such sweet kitties! From Tersuji and Yoko, to the cozy vibes, to the attentiveness and care - It was like being taken care of by my own grandparents!

The town is super cute, very quaint… but very small… make sure you bring your own snacks, sweets, drinks etc, because there’s only a couple of restaurants and they close early! BUT! The town is surrounded by mountains and outdoor activities, so definitely come here for that and the relaxation!

"We loved our stay there and would go back again. We had the breakfast on the first day and really enjoyed their hospital"

9.0

Location was right next to the river. Very peaceful and perfect for some birdwatching. There was a mini fridge, kettle & microwave oven for us to use. There was a small bathtub to soak our aching muscles after a long hike (set it to at least 55°C and press “auto”. Bring your own bath salts). We stayed in a traditional Japanese room so we had to make up our own futon for sleep, but that wasn’t an issue. Pyjamas aren’t provided and you need to rent the large bath towels (but pretty cheap, just 100yen).

Convenience store was 2 train stops away at Kori so we made grocery runs there. Make sure to check train timings before you set out. That 7-11 has prepared food and snacks and simple toiletries. They do not sell medications like paracetamol or plasters though, so make sure to bring your own. Pillows are the bean/rice type but a little tiny and very low. Bring your own or fold a towel under if you need more support. There was a slight issue of mold in the room - a little on the shower door and maybe some parts of the ceiling (I’m assuming that because I could only smell it when I was standing up). That triggered my asthma a little but was easily fixed with a few puffs on my inhaler. It could be because of the weather there or because the owners are quite elderly, so they can’t possibly clean every area 100%. Understandable. It didn’t cause any issues for my husband who doesn’t have asthma. Oh and you need to be able to navigate some stairs to get to your room.
