Emerald Mirror Guest Ella

We highly enjoyed our stay at Emerald Mirror Guest. The breakfast was amazing and really big. The host Supun was also very kind and accommodating. The accommodation is slightly outside of the city centre which means it’s much quieter there and you can enjoy a good night of sleep.

For context I am Sri Lankan. I booked this place for one night on a special trip to celebrate my mom’s birthday. Breakfast is a major selling point when I book hotels. And breakfast reviews of this place was exceptional. So I booked a room with breakfast. But at our breakfast only egg curry and some string hoppers were placed on the table. I found that a bit too simple, but assumed that the host would bring more things like fruits and other options (which he was preparing at the pantry as we ate) However all we got offered was tea or coffee as a beverage. Not even fruits. The breakfast was way too basic but assumed maybe they changed menus and that’s why it was so simple. While drinking coffee the host started setting up the table next to us for a foreign couple that would soon attend breakfast. That’s when I noticed he was bringing such a big variety of options for their table, pancakes, roti, omelettes, toast, condiments and a big bowl of freshly cut fruit. It was such a lavish breakfast and what I’ve seen in the previous review photos. That’s when we realized that we were being treated differently because we are locals, even though we booked the same exact “room with breakfast” option online as any other person. This was very disappointing and unacceptable. And I cannot think why the host didn’t feel ashamed to set such a lavishly prepared breakfast on the table next to us, while giving us such a poor and basic breakfast. At checkout we questioned the host as to why he treated us differently. To which the host replied “Sri Lankans don’t eat much breakfast, they don’t need a lot of options, this is what they eat” This reply infuriated me. He did NOT provide us with breakfast options the previous day. Only asked us what time we will be attending breakfast. He assumed all by himself the kind of breakfast we should have. We didn’t get the nice breakfast on the photos which was selling point of booking this place. Extremely disappointed with hosts hospitality.

The hill. But it is ella!

What a lovely home stay in Ella. Delicious breakfast cooked by the host every morning. Comfortable bed and nice views of the region. Steep hill up from town, just prepare for that haha. But short walk which is nice. Kind and friendly host.

A spacious room and well-working bathroom. The inn keeper, Supun was very kind and willing to help.

No much. It is located on the top of hill and it was a bit hard to access with a suitcase.

The location and the friendly staff

Good location. Close to train station and easy walking distance to restaurants and attractions. Nice view from the King room. Nice man looked after us but he has only been there for last few months. Good breakfast. Bathroom good size and modern enough.

None of the listed facilities were there. Queen Room was tiny. The King a better size but both were advertised as being 55sq metres. Not even close. No air conditioning. No TV, not that it was an issue but once again misrepresented on the description. Extremely hot in rooms. Needs screens on windows to stop insects but allow airflow to cool down room. Extremely steep climb up the hill. Other reviews raved about a couple running the place but that wasn’t our experience.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great. The room/bathroom was quite big. Many restaurants are in walking distance.

The road leading up to the hotel is suuuuuper steep. Meaning that almost no tuktuk driver took us all the way up to the hotel. The hotel is quite old meaning the windows are not that good and we were able to hear the music from the bars in the city center each night.
