Welsh Gatehouse A Historic Castle Retreat that Welcomes Dogs and Electric Vehicles

The location is absolutely fantastic and in a lovely part of Chepstow itself. The surroundings around the castle are beautiful. We also loved the complimentary welsh cakes that were supplied free of charge as well. The castle is incredibly well insulated for colder months of the year as well and this was a worry for us in the beginning, but the storage heaters and fireplace inside saved us from any troubles.

Mattress was particularly springy and wasn't the comfiest of beds to sleep in overnight if I am completely honest. There are also cobwebs by the back end windows, in the bathroom and as well as hanging down from ceiling above the bed itself. The stairs leading up/down the castle could do with repairs to make them appear safer to walk on in general. They are incredibly narrow and not designed for those with big feet. Maybe a sign is needed cautioning those who stay to take extra care.

A very historic building that has been converted into a cozy comfortable self contained flat with modern conveniences including wifi & a lovely log burner. Great for relaxing as a couple.

So quirky and full of interesting nooks. The wood fire was beautiful and we had everything we could possibly need. We will definitely be back.

A lot of thought was put into a guest staying at Welsh Gate, There was a lovely welcome pack waiting for us. It is cosy and romantic self catering property. The large sofa in front of log burner was extremely comfortable. Ipod docking station and selection of DVD's. Wifi and freeview TV. Modern kitchen. and you have access to the tower when wearing Flat shoes no heels. We found the information folder very helpful, full of useful tips. The Millers arms (10 min walk) does lovely food with friendly helpful staff.

If you are someone who wants to stay in a property that is rather different from the norm, then this one will be a welcome change. The gatehouse has the layout of a castle in minature with steep spiral staircases and a even a parapet that you can access at the very top of the building. The history of the local area, the building, and Wales generally is told in a very detailed and interesting account written by the owner. This is provided along with a large collection of walks in the local area and recommendations for dining. The kitchen was very well supplied. Not just with utensils and pots and pans, but also the little things that you need like cooking oil and salt and pepper. The owners had also provided a generous hamper of wine, chocolates, jams, and Welsh cakes. We chose this property because we were going to see a concert in Cardiff but we didn't want to stay in the city. Mathern to Cardiff is quite a short journey from the local train station but it is also only about an hour by car if you prefer.

The elements that give this property character and appeal are the same that also limit it for some travellers. The staircases are very steep and tight. An older person or someone with mobility issues would struggle to access the property at all. It was a struggle for me to get the suitcases up the stairs and I am a relatively healthy young man. There is also a ladder up to the bed that is quite precarious, you certainly wouldn't want to be faced with it at the end of the night after going out for a few drinks. The bathroom is also quite limited as the toilet and the shower share the same area. It's functional but little else.

Beautiful, quirky, secluded and unique. Stayed for my wifes 50th birthday. Lovely welcome basket, a little birthday present and a few essentials ready and waiting for us on arrival. I asked for a bottle of fizz as an extra which was chilled ready to start the celebrations. My wife was speechless when she saw the place, a first in over 20 years! Great country pub 5 minutes walk away.

The bathroom is a little dated, but this is an 800 year old building, not a premier inn.
