Old Kipper Cottage

It was difficult to open the patio door, which is the main entrance it seems. The room said to contain 1 single and 1 double, didn't have full size double (suitable for 2 adults), so one person had to sleep on couch. Place wasn't clean. Although we were told we could pre-arrange to have parking permits. None left or available. Host didn't communicate this, so we spent 1.5hrs trying to deal with this, for no reason.

The quirkiness & history of this property is amazing & the location was fantastic,don’t believe any rubbish reviews on this property it’s were people go to have a good time & party & that’s exactly wot we did

Great location. Great size and a good layout.

Great location and easy to walk every where. Kitchen could with salt pepper few more essentials. The cottage was great but could do with having the place vacuumed thoroughly and group of 4 people we only had to rolls of toilet paper and the rubbish wheelybin was full and stun k. So really need putting out for rubbish collection.

What could really do with an update is the instructions to get to cottage once one has arrived in Whitney as there is not Wi-Fi when driving in town. We repeatedly found ourselves in wrong location. Actually had to find our other friends lost as they really could not find it. Please update the black folder to 2025. What would make simple clear information on the car parking and that the permit supplied is on the other side of the inlet.

Excellent location, 2 doors away from the famous ‘Fortunes smokehouse’ in the historic part of Whitby - we had to have kippers at kippers. Small and old, but well appointed and clean house, tastefully furnished, small courtyard garden. We were a party of 6 and could not find fault with the standard of accommodation. Bagfuls of character. It is essential to follow the excellent directions given from the bottom of church street (first left after the swing bridge). Do not attempt the steep cobbled ‘donkey track’, next to the 199 steps, back down from the abbey unless you want to destroy your clutch trying to reverse back up or front valance and exhaust attempting to exit at the bottom. Ignore the sat nav and road signs for this route, unless you are on a donkey or be an ass if you don’t. Parking permits were offered and we would suggest are a ‘must have’ if staying longer than 1 night, but parking is on the west cliff about a mile away with them, the alternative is meter feeding. Church street car park is nearest but smallest car park which was permanently full, even out of season.

The property is delightfully quaint, which we loved, but may not be suitable for those with physical disabilities as the stairs are both steep and narrow with limited headroom. We arrived late, to discover the cleaners had not replenished toilet rolls and no milk. An easy resolve, as the co op was still open, but a long walk and was immediately refunded after contacting the owner.

Bedding could do with upgrading especially the 2 beds on floor 2
