Machiya Kyoto Shogoin

We spent three nights at this place. It is a wonderful historic house at the very convenient location in Kyoto. The host is absolutely helpful. The house has everything needed, all appliances are are of great quality. Japanese futon beds are very soft and we had no problem sleeping on them. It is a very quiet house. We use their bicycles and they worked great for us. Really a unique housing option. We plan to stay again next time we are in Kyoto.

This was perfect for our family of 4 and much welcome space a 4 nights in Tokyo on top of each other. We all opted to stay the first floor to make potential trips to the bathroom at night easier (stairs to second floor are a bit steep). Nagoa-san is wonderful host.

It was wonderful again. This house is a little older than the one I stayed in last fall, but everything was fine there too, and the courtyard was even nicer, more beautiful. The hosts were very scrupulous and caring, they took us to Kyoto station after check-out. I especially liked the courtyard, with its special atmosphere and almost metaphorical sense of calm.

There was nothing like that. You just need to be prepared for the peculiarities of a traditional Japanese house: lots of sliding walls, it can be cool, but you can warm up a separate room, you need to take a shower while sitting, but this has its own conveniences.

For just two of us there was plenty of space - much appreciated after the typical small hotel room at this price point. We were able to do some cooking and laundry. And the owners were really friendly and helpful, even taking us to Kyoto Station at the end of our stay.

The dining table was the traditional low type. Even though it had a hidden recess to hang our legs it was still a bit of a struggle for us.

We were so lucky to stay in Nagao san 's house. The house is so beautiful, everything was comfortable and clean . It's a traditional house and you feel very lucky to stay there. The ice on the cake is the owner and his wife . They were so friendly and helpful. We will not forget this amazing stay and recommend it at 200 %

The host was very welcoming and showed us around the house when we arrived. The highlight was definitely the kotatsu in the living room, great for the cold winter days. The futon beds were comfortable. It is located in a quiet neighbourhood and 5 minute walk to bus stops. There were bicycles to use but we didn’t make use of them.

it's a 100 years old Machiya house. Owner is so kind and considerate. you have everything you need. The house is super clean and will give you a super nice experience in Kyoto. And there is a parking lot.

Mr Nagao accommodated our request for a 9am - 10am checkin, and was in fact waiting out in front of his place to greet us the morning we arrived! He and his wife were so kind. His wife offered us a ride to the airport the day we left, but since the walk to the train station was only 10 minutes or so (and pretty much a straight line from the train station to his home, so next to impossible to get lost) and another 10 minutes or so by train to Kyoto Station(with one short transfer at Tofukji) we politely declined her generous offer. If you want a real Japanese experience, this is the place for you! Two Japanese bedrooms (tatami with two comfy futons in each), a full kitchen, living room, dining room (with kotatsu), laundry room, shower (with Japanese bath) and of course a Japanese toilet. You're getting a complete home here! This was a great way to enjoy the last two days of our 24 day stay in Japan!
