"Wonderful holiday flat in Kumano Kodo region"

10.0

The owner is very nice and eventhough he sais that he can't speak English, he succeeded in communicating with us. As the previous guests had already left early, he allowed us to check in at 9:45, so we could start hiking without worrying about our big luggage. In the evening we had a great dinner at his Yakitori restaurant, which is only a few meters away. The apartment is big and pretty. For cool nights, there are heating carpets, so you don't get cold in your futon bed. When we left, there was a surprise on the doorstep: two Onigiri (the small shop nearby was still closed when we left at 8:30)!

We struggled a bit to find the way to and from Yunomine Onsen with our map.

A beautiful old farm house on the Kumano Kodo. Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic experience!

I understand that the house is quite big and old, so might be difficult to manage, but still some places could have been a little cleaner/tidied up.

Our host Manabu is very hospitable, and ensures everything is going well for your visit. We enjoyed the location, 10 .minutes walk to fabulous onsen, quiet rural village. There is a small minimalist for groceries, Okagesan yakitoria run by Manabu san, and the cafe at the onsen for meals.

Nothing of importance. There are some minor repairs needed, but this is an old.house, so can be expected.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This traditional Japanese house is very well looked after and is in a great location, and within walking distance of two onsen. Manabu is a great host, even delivering handmade rice balls each morning. We also ate at his restaurant which was very good. Highly recommended.

Guesthouse okagesan is a truly great and amazing place to stay and if you want to experience the real Japan, the Japan like an advertisment you need to stay here. The house is clean cozy and well equipped and the owner will give you a tour. On top of that his restaurant is very delicious, reasonable priced and an experience itself.

Our lodging is a historic house, more than 100 years old. The house has all of the features of an authentic Japanese mountain home. The floors are covered with tatami mats, and rooms divided by sliding fusuma doors. There is an irori hearth and in the kitchen is an old- fashioned kamado rice cooking stove built into the floor. The house has lots of antiques and yet fully furnished with modern facilities. Manabu San was consistently thoughtful and generous. He goes out of his way to make sure we have a comfortable and well-provisioned stay. The thought that has been put into everything we could possibly need is impressive. This is truly a home away from home. The house is very spacious, comfortable and warm (in the areas where we spent most time). It's a quiet and peaceful house next to the river, you get soothed at night with the sound of the flowing water. Manabu-san pops by our lodge with rice-balls. The rice balls are always accompanied with lovely handwritten notes to wish us well and to ask if anything is well with us! At the verandah of the house, Manabu-san has ready seeds and water for the birds. Each morning you will get up to the sound of birds chirping. The front paper-screen-door of the house has a special sliding window that opens up so that you can watch the bird through a clear screen in your warm bedroom. There is also the washing machine and a dryer in the yard in front ready for our convenience. There are very generous supplies of provisions - really great coffee (instant and drip) and both black and green tea. There are all kinds of snacks which get replenished daily. We didn't cook but we saw supplies for cooking in the kitchen and fridge. Every morning, Mahabu san would bring us really great tasting rice balls! There's ample supply of toiletries and he provides ample towels for your convenience. I read that the house was visited by Yamamoto Genpo Roshi, who is a famous and great monk in the Showa era.

"Nice old Japanese house, which is fine as long as you not expecting Western style comfort"

8.0

Big house with a lot of character and good facilities. Attentive host, leaving snacks and checking everything ok.

Not particularly comfortable futons. Location fairly isolated so not many food or eating options.
