Guesthouse Okagesan

This was one of those unexpected amazing places that immerse you in a new culture. Great hospitality, easy access to amazing onsens and all in a wonderful authentic rural Japanese home. Big warm hug from Japan with the best yakitori food next door!

We had a wonderful stay at Guesthouse Okagesan! It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. It was amazing to have the whole house to ourselves (great value for money) and there were a lot of thoughtful touches around the home including good heating, a coffee maker and snacks. Our host was fantastic and left us onigiri every morning. Would definitely stay again!

This guesthouse was our favourite accommodation of our three week trip. Having the whole place to ourselves was amazing. The host left lots of snacks, which we ate while watching the birds feed outside. The table had a heater underneath it so you could sit and keep your legs warm. After a very long walk, the extra 20 mins to the accommodation from the trail felt long, but it did mean a short 10 min walk to a lovely hot spring the next morning to start the day. A fully equipped kitchen too. Beautiful space.

the host surprised us with a litle breakfast which was not prearranged. A very nice gesture. We had a lovelysupper in his restaurant nearby.

I understood that the host might be attending to his restaurant when I arrived and would have to go back and forth between the two places. However, he gave no information nor did he leave a note telling me what I should do if he wasn’t at the guesthouse to greet me. I was lucky that Google maps was a few doors off in its navigation and I ended at a neighbour’s house. That neighbour called the host to say I had arrived and walked me down to the restaurant. The host was gruff and simply asked for payment. He said I’d have to wait for him to take me back to the guesthouse bc he wanted to explain things to me. I had something to eat and then told him I’d wait for him at the guesthouse. It was unlocked so i went in and made my bed and went to sleep. The host never showed up that night. I saw him for about 15 seconds in the morning when he dropped off a rice ball with a note saying it wasn’t necessary to meet face to face to check out. Worst reception I have ever experienced.

The owner is really kind! The place is really big, super nice and has everything we needed and more. The location was perfect in between the hikes we did. The restaurant of the owner is the perfect place to eat at Night! Really cosy place in a nice little village.

We stayed in a lot of great places during our trip to Japan, but this was my favorite. The house was beautiful and atmospheric, like something out of a dream. The host was friendly and helpful. We met him at his restaurant down the block and he showed us to the property and recommended a nearby hot spring. The house is located in the Hongu area, a ten or fifteen minute walk from the bus stop that will take you to the shrines and Kumano Kodo.
