Nether Onston Cottage

We liked the spaciousness and comfort in the cottage. The kitchen had all we needed and it was appreciated that the hosts left some food items such as coffee, milk, bread, eggs etc. Attractive lakeside location with large garden with summerhouse.

Gorgeous retreat. Away from everything yet close to all the ‘must see’ places. Beautifully thought out, clean, all the conveniences required, comfy beds, good shower and very clean.

Bella, very welcoming. Extra touches. There was even mixed berry preserves with the food supplied. Room to move. Position was central to the Standing Stones and places of historical interest. Kitchen and laundry facilities.

The weather. But that can’t be helped.

Lovely cottage, comfortable, clean and well equipped. Absolutely beautiful location and within easy reach of many sights and attractions. Great garden too!

Good location. Well equipped, clean and comfortable, no issues. Good communication from the host. Some basic food stuffs and a few nice treats put in before I arrived, lovely touch, thanks. I was travelling for work (in winter) so I was out all day most days, probably didn't make the most of the location, I imagine it would be even better during the summer months.

We spent a week at Nether Onston Cottage in October, and it didn’t disappoint in any way. Despite really stormy Orcadian weather the cottage was always cosy - quick to heat up with the central heating, and then really warm and inviting once the woodburner was going. The supply of logs was very generous and adds great value to the stay. Indoors has everything we needed to cater for our stay, but Stromness is a 5-10 minute drive if you choose to eat out instead. Kirkwall another 10-15. The location is fantastic, and arguably not advertised enough in the listing. It’s right on the Loch of Stenness, no roads or fences in between! We sat out in the garden one evening and watched the Northern lights over the Ring of Brodgar with uninterrupted views. There were many species of birds on the loch, and an otter that would pass by too. Finally, guests could not want for more helpful hosts. The whole family were so friendly and always quick to respond. The parents kept us stocked with fresh eggs from the farm hens, and any other queries we had were answered by Bella. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you all for such a special stay. Even the stormy weather made it more of an adventure. We hope to visit again 😊

It’s not a “didn’t like”, but for other potential guests… please don’t go to a rural spot on Orkney and expect super fast wifi. The signal was enough for standard streaming most of the time, and perfectly good for emails, web surfing etc

Gorgeous location and views, great proximity to many historic sites. Our hosts were wonderful: attentive, thoughtful, generous, helpful. They really went the extra mile to ensure we were comfortable. The cottage is lovely, perfect for families or couples. All the amenities and great layout. We highly recommend!
