Abbey and Esk Bed and Breakfast

Lovely hosts including the 2 dogs. Comfortable, clean room in a fantastic location. Breakfast was excellent. Would definitely stay again.

Abbey and Esk B&B is a "home from home". The house is conveniently situated a ten minute walk from town. We left our car parked outside the house and walked everywhere during our stay. The hosts, Ruth and Tony, were very friendly and welcoming.

There wasn't anything we didn't like.

Stairs were a struggle

The breakfast was very good and substantial.

We were very happy with all arrangements and facilities.

Provided water. Towels were nice.

This is a place with a bed, and they give you breakfast. It's not a bed and breakfast. That does a disservice to the B&Bs that truly use the title, get the right certificates and training. Dog mess. Not just once but every time we went out. Imagine rolling your suitcase wheel through dog poo. Garden generally unmaintained. It's a nice look, but having six inches of a path free to walk on isn't great health and safety. You eat breakfast literally in their living room. With the TV blaring. There were no choices, and a plate of bacon and sausage was served even though we'd let them know in advance. Dogs. The whole house smells strongly of dogs. They have two. They are cute as. But I don't want to smell them and fall over them. Shower hair - just no. This is basic stuff. Random toiletries. Not thoughtfully provided ones, just random massive shower gels and no shampoo. There are a lot of stairs. I was prepared for that. But there is stuff all over them, next to them. Random chairs, photos on spindly tables, pictures. I have a bag. Everyone that stays will have a bag. Over furnished room. Again, I was prepared for a small room. I was not prepared for 3 plastic dusty orchids taking the space I might want for my stuff and seating for three people in front of other furniture. There are no locks. They are open about this, but actually, the front door is open all the time too. No fire plan No list of local facilities No food hygiene certificate It's not a B&B. Advertise it as a room for rent sure. If you like staying with relatives but don't have any in Whitby, this is the place for you.

Ruth and Tony were amazing hosts. We felt like part of their family.

The location was really good, with parking on a private road outside the house. A short walk into the centre. The hosts were very friendly and chatted to you whilst having breakfast. The breakfast was very nice with a really good choice of food. The family house was an Aladdin's cave with lots of photos and ornaments through out the house to look at in the rooms and stairs.

The bedroom was on the 4th floor of the house which I hadnt noticed when booking. There are also steps to get to the house from the pavement. I am reasonably fit but found it strenuous to climb the stairs especially with luggage. There are no locks on the 2 bedroom doors. We went with friends but I dont feel I'd be as comfortable if it had been strangers in the adjacent room.
