Sima Sumba Hotel

By far the best hotel of Tambolaka/Waitabula. The hotel is relatively new and that shows. Everything is still shiny and in good condition. Hopefully they'll invest in maintenance the upcoming years to keep it like that. At other places we noticed that's often overlooked in Sumba. We stayed in a junior executive suite, to which two beds were added for our kids. The room was beautifully designed and comfortable. The beds are plush. We slept like babies. All amenities and services you'd wish for are available. Staff is extremely friendly and effective. Best of all is the massive swish pool. Our kids had a blast. Coffee is great as well. It's one of the few places in town with a proper espresso machine (apart from the Talasi estate). The restaurant has a variety of local and international dishes. Quality is good; portions are on the smallish side. One suggestion perhaps: a hairdryer in each room. Ours didn't have one, but that's a detail. All in all, we had a great - and very relaxing - stay at Sima Sumba.

Great hotel and staff. The hotel is located in the west part of the island not far away from most of the attractions such as local ancient villages, lagoons, and waterfalls, beach’s, etc. The GPS reception in the island is not very good outside the main tows/locations, however, the hotel can arrange easy transportation to visit the island around as you desire. They also can help with local guides. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful always trying to help guests. The facilities are great and the restaurant food is delicious. A big shout out to the manager, Annank which made sure my stay was extremely pleasant. The only done side, which is more related to sumba it self rather the hotel, there are not many restaurants around the hotel if you want to get out but, as mentioned, there restaurant has many and delicious options.

Included breakfast was of mediocre quality, would expect much better food for the price we paid. Most of the staff at breakfast doesn't speak English, which makes it hard to order what you are after. The location of the hotel is bad, at least 10 min walk to smalles minimart. Our room didn't close properly by itself, we always had to push it closed. One day, we were out the whole day and returned to our room not being closed properly after housekeeping... luckily we locked all our valuables in our suitcase before we left.. At 8am in the morning they would get event rooms ready at the floor above us, and playing super loud Indonesian music. When reported that the music woke us up, we got an apologies and it stopped, to then start again after an hour. And every other morning we would be waken up by the loud music again. Gym was open from 6am till 10pm, but AC was never turned on when we arrived. So we had to turn it on ourselves, and having to work out in a very hot room for most of the workout. Plus, getting bitten by mosquito's as they were happy to be in the hot room. Internet is not as great as advertised. Often needed to connect again, and once couldn't connect at all. Got an error message, staff tried and them said there were internet problems (my partner had no issues..) Unfortunately this hotel had much more bad than good. For $85 a night I would expect much better service..
