Bluff Shoal Motel

This is an old style mom and pop motel (as they all are on tiny Okracoke) with just 7 units. The further away you are from the office, the less likely you are to get internet connection, and we were in unit 7. But, no problem, I just sat on the front porch near the office to check email, etc. The parking is a bit tight, esp if you have a big pickup or SUV, as spots are close together, directly in front of each unit, and just 1 car-length from the street. The room is very basic: time-worn, but clean, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The best part was the backyard view and deck area on the inlet. Sunsets to die for, picturesque fishing boats anchored nearby, lighthouse across the way. So relaxing and peaceful, a step back to a simpler place and time. Just as it should be on vacation!

The location can't be beat! They have a great deck behind the hotel overlooking Silver Lake and the lighthouse. You can also sit on the front porch and people watch. The rooms are simple and clean and reminiscent of hotels in the 60's. Small refrigerator in the room and morning coffee available in the office. Staff is friendly and go out of their way cleaning the room after you go out for the day so they won't disturb you.

My husband and I visited for a little getaway. We already knew how much we loved Ocracoke, but it is even that much better to enjoy it from the middle of the village! This motel is not full of amenities, but what it lacks in amenities it makes up for in charm! It is dated, but clean. The deck overlooking the water is comfortable and inviting with views like no other! If you are looking for glitz and glamour this is not your place. If you are looking for a comfortable, clean place to relax, this is the place!

This was a very good hotel with a wonderful staff. The parking is a little hard as they have trees between the parking spots. Other than that, it is right in the middle of town within walking distance to restaurants and stores. Close to the ferry and beach. They have a fridge in the room but not a microwave. Can't wait to go back!

This my second year staying here in the Apt. My parents stayed her for almost 40 years. The apt. has 2 bedrooms with a full kitchen, a dining area,and a living room. So nice you have to make reservations a year in advance. It's rented for a week at a time, from Sat. to Sat.

I have to say...I am completely impressed with my stay here. It was clean, affordable and they were so nice and helpful. This beats any chain I have ever stayed in. Do not look for bells and whistles...that would take away from the experience. It is close to everything so you can just park your car and walk around town. It is perfect just the way it is. I will definitely stay here again.

We love staying here because it's close walking to everything you want to do.The biggest + for Bluff Shoal is that we can feel peace of mind with leaving personal items in our room to go explore the island. I did leave behind an item a few yrs. ago and called them they mailed it out the next day. It just FEELS right to stay here. I just hope now that I didn't give up my room because I never make a reservation, we are always walk ins. Keep up the great work.

A small family-owned motel; good price; very clean, especially comfortable; near several very good restaurants. Traveling alone, I felt fortunate to find this very good bed for the night and was able to easily catch the ferry to Cedar Island in the morning. Highly recommend.

We have stayed here several times over the years. It is an older motel - but quite clean and the owners are very nice. Don't go here expecting luxury...go here to get the quaint island feel that it offers. It is within easy walking distance of several restaurants, the beds are comfortable, and it is reasonably priced.

We weren't completely surprised to walk into a exceptionally clean room - because of the great reviews we had read - but it was a relief nonetheless. Yes, the decor is dated, but honestly I'd rather see a 60's theme rather than a 70s or 80s. Somehow it doesn't seem as dated if it's that outdated. I know - that doesn't make sense, now that I see it in writing. Maybe it reminds me of my grandmother's house or something. I looked for info on whether there was a place to hang clothes, but never found it, so I'm including it here... There is a place to hang clothes, but bring your own hangers. There is an ice machine in the office and also pretty good coffee waiting in the morning. Oh - and nice large parking spots. This was important to my husband who go out of his way to avoid parking next to door-nickers. Last but not least - very friendly and helpful staff.
