Baker's cottage

I came to Bakers Cottage for just one night, but because of the warm hospitality and the beauty of this place, I decided to stay 05 more days. The garden is filled with luxurious greenery and the peaceful sound of birds, making every morning feel fresh and relaxing. Every morning, monkeys visit the garden, which makes the experience even more special. The sound of the waves reaches the rooms like a soft whisper from the beach. Mother prepares delicious Sri Lankan breakfasts every morning, and you should definitely try the traditional Sri Lankan herbal drink. Guests can also order lunch and dinner from the cottage, all homemade with love by Mother. It’s a perfect chance to taste a variety of authentic Sri Lankan local dishes. They also provide airport shuttle service with a friendly driver, and guests can easily plan their entire Sri Lanka trip with Kasun, the host. One of the most unforgettable experiences was seeing turtles and having the chance to release baby turtles into the sea. It was truly magical and emotional. Finally, don’t miss the Madu River boat safari and the Ayurvedic massage experience. Definitely, I will come back again!

In der Umgebung gibt es kaum Restaurants, sodass man auf die Verpflegung in der Unterkunft angewiesen ist. Diese is zwar sehr lecker, aber deutlich überteuert, 3000 Rupien für ein Kottu und eine kleine Schale Eis haben wir danach nicht mehr annähernd gezahlt. Auch der Transfer vom Flughafen war deutlich teurer als andere spätere Fahrer, besonders hat uns geärgert, dass wir in dem Obstladen, bei dem er für uns angehalten hat, 6000 Rupien für eine Ananas, eine Papaya und 3 Mangos bezahlt haben, auch hier wurden wir unter seiner Aufsicht über den Tisch gezogen.

Very peaceful and close to the beach!

Wat een waardevol verblijf was dit! We werden hartelijk ontvangen door de eigenaar en verbleven in een zeer stijlvolle cottage waar duidelijk veel aandacht en warmte is voor de gasten. Het ontbijt was heerlijk en er was ook een mogelijkheid om ’s avonds te dineren. De vrouw des huizes bereidde een fantastische met liefde gemaakte maaltijd — echt vele malen beter dan wat je hier in hotels krijgt.

Location was ideal as it was on our way back to the airport. It is also a great beach area and famous for turtle hatcheries. We also really enjoyed the Madu boat and river safari. We also managed to fit in a family Ayurveda massage session for all the family which the host family arranged prior to our arrival.

The Baker’s Cottage was an absolute gem of a place! We stayed at the villa next to the garden — simple, rustic, and beautifully natural (not manicured or artificial in any way). The rooms are large, creatively built, and clean. You can see the thought and character that has gone into designing them. 10/10 to this place! Starting with the pickup — Kasun (you’ll hear more about him!) picked us up promptly from the airport, the 90–120 minute drive smooth and comfortable. We were treated to an excellent Sri Lankan breakfast every morning — truly one of the highlights of our trip. As a vegetarian, I had struggled during my previous visit to Sri Lanka, but Kasun and his family made sure we were well taken care of. In fact, we went back for second servings! The taste still lingers. Don’t miss the curry, sambol, and rice — absolutely delicious. The beach is about 200 meters away, though you may want to walk a little further towards Yathra Restaurant — the stretch there is even better. A cup of coffee by the beach is a must! We also did the Madu River boat ride —. Kasun personally drove us and accompanied us on the ride. We went early in the morning and enjoyed the fresh breeze through the mangroves. What made it even more special were the conversations — learning about the culture, local life, and stories. It felt authentic and meaningful. Evenings were relaxed and peaceful. If you’re looking for something more lively, Sheraton is nearby as well. Kasun arranged bikes for us, which made getting around super easy. If you’re traveling as a bigger family, I’m sure they can arrange a tuk-tuk too. Overall, we had a fantastic time at The Baker’s Cottage. Kasun and his family are incredibly professional, warm, and helpful. At the end of the day, a place is just a building — what makes it special is the people and their story. Kasun is a master storyteller. We came in as guests and left as friends.
