"Our stay was so disappointing, we will not be returning"

The property is being upgraded. Our room had just been decorated was poor quality. The finishes in the "grand" bathroom were shoddy, old radiator pipes still sticking out of the wall. Corners not joined and just not finished to a good standard. The two windows in our room had different colour ill fitting curtains that didn't reach all the way down. Where our room was situated we could be looked into from the other rooms. The "continental" breakfast was brought to the table and consisted of a tablespoon of stale cornflakes and a bowl of fruit. The eggs on the English breakfast were hard and some of the elements on the plate were cold. We stayed for two nights so the following morning l asked for toast and jam and my husband asked for scrambled eggs on toast. A rather large man came from the kitchen and showed us the from the kitchen and showed us the meagre menu and said "This is what we offer for breakfast!" We complained that when we had received our breakfasts they were not of a good standard. On hearing this the man just walked back into the kitchen and another man said that it would take about 20 minutes to make the scrambled eggs and toast! We eventually got our requested breakfast. We had to ask for butter as none was offered and we were given one butter portion for four slices of toast! There were people doing yoga in the restaurant and the music, at full blast was interesting! Kanye West "Power" the language was colourful to say the least! The staff did not speak clear English and did not seem to understand what we wanted.

"Stay away unless you want a parking fine"

My Wife and I stayed at this hotel as and overnight stopover when visiting the nearby RHS flower show in July. Like everyone elses comments we found that the hotel seemed to be an ongoing refurbishment by new owners. The young lad on reception seemed to not know what he was doing as it took 3 attempts just to get our room door open. However, I was going to put a favourable review until this morning (29/8/25)when I recieved through the post a parking fine of £100 for illegally parking in the hotel carpark. Apparently you have to register your car reg to get permit to park there. We were certainly NOT informed of this when we checked in and there was NO clear signage telling us this. We find this an absolute disgrace and would certainly NOT return and would advise others to stay well away from this place. I will certainly be putting in a complaint to Booking.com as there was no mention if this parking condition on there website when booking. Livid !!!!

"Don't believe the booking details"

I recently stayed at the Staindrop Hotel (26–29 June 2025), and my experience has been extremely disappointing. The hotel advertises “Free private parking on site (no reservation needed).” However, despite registering my car at reception for every day of my stay, I have since received two separate parking fines for using the hotel’s own car park. This is completely unacceptable. Guests should not be misled into believing parking is free if, in reality, it results in extortionate fines. The management’s failure to prevent this shows either gross negligence or indifference to customer experience. What should have been a straightforward hotel stay has now turned into a stressful and costly situation. Unless the hotel takes immediate responsibility to resolve these fines, I will be escalating the matter through Booking.com and leaving formal complaints with the relevant authorities. If you value honesty and peace of mind when travelling, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere.
