Wood Palace Ella

The entirely wooden home was an amazing sight and the view was even better. We arrived in the evening and woke up to a spectacular sight hearing the river/waterfalls down below. Absolutely stunning. The family that runs Wood Palace is amazing and has been great in accommodating us with anything we needed during our stay, first making arrangements for me as I was planning to propose to my girlfriend and later whilst our son got sick. The amazing starry nights from the balcony and fireflies lighting up the view topped it off. It’s located a little outside of Ella (5min drive) which made it very peaceful and quiet. The owner has a TukTuk and can bring you anywhere you need very quickly. Would definitely recommend! Thank you for a very memorable stay

If I could think of anything it’s the water pressure of the shower

Beautiful setting on the edge of the forest. There was a waterfall flowing through the forest which was quite noisy but did not keep us awake! Lots of steps down to the cabin but the family took down our bags. The breakfast was delicious: lots of fruit, a smoothy and omelette. On the second morning we had egg hoppers instead of omelette. Would highly recommend. Lovely family, so helpful.

Some extra pillows would be good but really nothing more than that!

Loved this place, the owners have built it themselves and our cabins overlooking the forest were picture perfect and the bed so comfortable. They are still adding to the building but that was not an issue at all. The family all looked after us and were so very friendly. Just a short tuktuk ride into town. Be aware of steep steps down to the rooms. It was not a problem for us but would be if you need walking aids or crutches.

Delightful quiet jungle setting with amazing views, just a 5 minute ťuk ťuk ride outside of the main strip. Run by a family who are so lovely and helpful, and breakfast was also very good.

It should be pointed out that there are a number of very steep stairs that you need to use to access the room. Quite the work out every day which became a bit of a chore, and not recommended for anyone who may have mobility issues.

We loved our stay here! The hosts were so kind and accommodating - making our stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. They drove us into Ella for dinner in the Tuk Tok, and made sure we had all we needed. The views are wonderful with the sound of the waterfall making you feel like it's just you and nature!

We really liked it here so booked an extra night! Quite and secluded - this place is perfect if you want to get away from the busyness of Ella (which is easy to get to) and enjoy some time in nature. Staff were so friendly and helpful.

The family running this homestay is exceptionally friendly and helpful. The granny carried our luggage down the steep staircase and cooked a simple, but delicious breakfast. Her son exceeded himself by helping me organise train tickets to Colombo ahead of our arrival. He also offers a TukTuk service into Ella town (about 500 Rupees) and can arrange for a day trip around the area if you wish (He took us to the 9 arches bridge, Little Adam's peak and a herbal garden). The view was just breathtaking and we loved sitting on the deck at night, watching the fire flies. Breakfast was basic but plentiful (fresh fruit juice, toast, omelette, fruit, butter, jam).

The accommodation has been built entirely by the family and you can see how much effort and hard work they have put into it. It is a basic hotel though with some open areas (no windows) and some critters (ants mainly). The beds were protected by a very good mosquito net though, so we were fine. The bathroom could do with a stool to put your cloths while having a shower. The water pressure was a bit low, not a big deal though.

Warning don’t book here if you have any form of mobility problem. Why do I start my review with this because our cabin was reached by some very steep stairs. Although the family helped with one small bag they were still dangerous especially in the dark and pouring rain. Enough about the negative. When you reach the room all I can say is wow. The son’s owner has personally built two amazing rooms over looking the hills and waterfall of Ella. There is one double and one family consisting of 2 double beds and a mezzanine floor for the kids. Double shower and double sink in the bathroom. Both rooms have a balcony overlooking the hills and waterfall. You can see that his heart and soul have gone into building these rooms. Although we had an enjoyable stay, sadly what lets it down is no water pressure for the shower, quality of products, sheets and towels. Some reviews say best breakfast in SL. I dispute that. It was adequate. Served by the smiling nana and grand daughter. A real family business. These rooms have only been open 3 months. I hope they are very successful for this delightful family.

The hotel was located in the middle of the forest, near a waterfall, our house was in a tree. The view from the balcony is amazing, and the sounds of nature are beautiful. A hotel unlike any other.
