Excellent food. Very nice outdoor pool. Lovely paths down to the lake.

I wished that I could speak the local language, but all staff were very gracious to me.

"Perfect if you write murder mysteries and need inspiration for your next book."

4.0

On the positive side, the hotel property is beautiful, or at least you can tell it used to be. It is in need of a facelift. The location on the lake and the scenery surrounding it is gorgeous. And the people who work there are very nice. The pool was as advertised and the wood-fired sauna was neat. Kinda like being a pizza in a brick kiln.

On the other hand, we didn’t see another guest the entire time we were there. I don’t think there were any others. So the vibe was a little creepy. And good luck getting there if you drive. Unless you drive a tuk tuk there’s only one combination of roads wide enough for a car to access the hotel, only it’s not clear at all what roads those are and which direction you are supposed to drive on them. It’s a puzzle where the loser gets stuck in an alley or is left facing a row of honking tuk tuks. Thankfully the town came out on a Sunday afternoon to provide many opinions on how to get my van unstuck. They were in the end helpful, and we got free without a scratch (ok a small one but the rental car company didn’t seem to mind so I’m not counting it). The other downside was food. We didn’t try the hotel restaurant, because no one else was staying there we didn’t have high hopes for the freshness of the food. But the restaurants in town were not good. I would recommend staying in San Pedro or San Marcos instead, we got great meals there. And do take the water taxis if you can. Driving around the lake is not for the faint of heart. And it’s not the fastest way to get around.
