Clarence Quarters Vintage Seafront Guest House

The location was excellent.

Nothing: noisy, dirty, and without sound protection.

It hasn’t been refurbished for many years, scaffold outside (sea view? as it was advertised?). No bathroom in the room. You can hardly sleep, listening to snoring of your neighbours and slamming the doors at 3 am.

Location was great. Luckily only had 2 flights of steps to our room. Large TV. Free WiFi with very good signal. Clean room.

The fire alarm went off twice during our stay. Once was at around 1am and had to wait outside until the fire brigade had checked inside to ensure the property was safe. Quite soon after the alarm, received a text from the owners which reminded residents about smoking inside, therefore putting the ones on the guests. This was also done when the alarm went off the day before. Once back inside we were winding down in bed trying to sleep when I received another text message from the owners. The cleaner came to the room to check everything after the first alarm. Whilst in there we requested more coffee, milk and sugar sachets. Everything was counted and noted as to what we had used and how many extra we were given. These were also photographed. It felt extremely weird. We also mentioned that the wall socket where the heater had been in, had got really hot and we had seen it sparking. She said this would be reported and someone would check it out but they didn't. It was almost impossible to use the sockets so called next to the bed, because they were being the bed which was so heavy that it couldn't be moved. There is no direct access to the bar. There seemed to be no other fire exit other than the door we used to enter the building. The carpet is worn and barely there in places. No refrigerator in the room. We were advised to put milk in the sink filled with cold water. Didn't want to dare ask for any additional milk for the coffee! Would really not be great during warmer months. However, we couldn't use the heater and only had things sheets on the bed, so it wasn't very comfortable in March/April either. I could go on.

Excellent location along the seafront, parking close by on the road was no hassle and reasonably priced (although the price has nothing to do with the accommodation). Room was clean and tidy with everything we needed. Easy access to the room once checked in via door code and key box code.

The beautiful location, very spacious room and the helpful staff made my stay very enjoyable.

I did have some difficulties accessing the property at first, but luckily the host was very helpful.

Location is great but that unfortunately didn't make up for how run down this place was.

I literally booked another hotel and paid for 2 hotels for my time down south this year. I had read recent reviews of the queen room claiming it to be comfortable. I'm assuming the people who wrote these reviews usually sleep on a cement floor? This was the most uncomfortable stay of my life. The bed had springs sticking through the mattress, the carpet is so worn down there's holes in it, the door lock got stuck every time locking or unlocking the room, it was a 25°C day and the heating was on FULL blast the whole time with the radiator knob making no difference. There was scaffolding covering the whole hotel and the cherry on top - the manager/owner was completely unreachable once I had checked in.
