"Avoid! Will never return"

1.0

Good aircon and reliable wifi, the only reason for 1/10.

Before arrival, we messaged to explain that we had booked the night before specifically so we could check in at 7am after arriving on a sleeper bus. Despite explaining this multiple times, we were repeatedly told we couldn’t check in until eventually someone understood the situation. We stayed in a 16-bed dorm. The noise during the day was fine, but it continued throughout the night. Around 10:30pm, two guests entered the room and had a heated argument before behaving in a way that made me feel extremely uncomfortable and unsafe, especially as a female traveller sleeping in the bed closest to them. I was relieved to have my partner there, but I would not recommend this place for solo travellers incase of similar situations The noise continued all night — doors slamming, phone calls at 5am, and music being played out loud despite signs stating that noise after 10pm was not allowed. This was not a party hostel issue, just a lack of consideration from guests and no staff presence to manage it. We tried to find someone to complain to, but there was nobody available. Breakfast was very disappointing. Food was left uncovered, drinks were instant coffee granules with lukewarm water, and orange juice left out in a kettle. Towels were also not provided. The bathrooms were in a poor state. We even saw a staff member enter, see the condition of the toilet, and leave without cleaning it. This makes the repeated response that they “cannot control what guests do” frustrating — while they cannot control guests, they can control the cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities. At checkout (11am), staff told us we could stay in the room until our 11:30 bus. However, at 11:10 a staff member pulled back my curtain without warning to ask if I was staying, which felt like a serious invasion of privacy. Unfortunately, we would not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone looking for a safe, clean place with a good night’s sleep.

The beds were comfortable and the aircon was nice and cold. Very good price.

Unfortunately the bathrooms really weren’t nice. There was peoples left over toiletries, and what I think was chewing gum on the floor.

"Pros and cons"

5.0

Excellent location, close to the shore and night market. Low price incl basic breakfast, even though sometimes served an hour too late and 2 out of 3 mornings there was no coffee. You can pay by card (3%). Wifi worked well. The French (?) and local guy a reception are friendly and polite, the girls are so knee-deep into their phones that they don't even notice you when you're right in front of them. AC nice and cold, how I like it.. Dorms like little pods with thick curtains, lights and electricity plugs. Lockers available. It's not a typical backpackers hostel, most guests are working immigrants pending their residency. That's neither good or bad, just a different vibe.

20 beds in 1 room if I'm not mistaken, which is simply too many to get any good rest. I was unaware that's how big these dorms are (usually it's 4-6-8 bed). At any moment, also in the night and super early morning, people make noise slamming the doors, watching stuff on their phone without headphones, ruffling bags, snore or even make phone calls. A lot of people are just very inconsiderate, apparently. Only with sleep medication I could knock myself out, but I didn't sleep well here (and I'm an easy sleeper normally). They have some kind of system where they pay you if you rat someone out who's breaking the rules, which I guess is an attempt to fix it, but in reality who's gonna turn the light on to film some other guest at midnight? The only way to fix this is smaller dorms. As there are several huge dorms like that and only 4 toilets and 4 showers, hygiene is at a low level in the bathrooms. Often some people don't even flush after #2 or they can't as it's broken, they blow their nose in the sink without cleaning, constantly spitting and gurgling. The worst part is that they want you to go in there BAREFOOT, amidst the spit and the pee splattered on the floor by the 95% male guests and all bacterias that are in every bathroom and can't be wiped away with a simple broomstick. I used slippers I only use indoors and the cleaning lady still made a big fuss and even threatened to keep my bond. I respect local customs when I'm visiting a country and taking shoes off when going into a house or temple is a great idea, but going barefoot in a PUBLIC toilet is an unreasonable thing to ask people. I have visited 95 countries by now and Laos is the only country where I saw locals doing that, even in neighboring countries in Asia they will provide at least slippers (or let you use your own).
