"Great food and welcome. Accomodation needs attention."

4.0

The food and drink was what we went for and we were not disappointed. An excellent evening meal and very good breakfast. The wine selection was also very good and I would certainly recommend the food and drink to any other meat eaters. The Chateaubriand was the best I have tasted and was cooked perfectly. My one regret was that we should have starved ourselves in the day, made the evening last and made room for the Crème Brûlée. The staff were friendly if forgetful at times but overall pleasant and helpful.

I rarely comment on this bit but don’t believe I am being fair to the Dartmoor Inn if I don't provide feedback. It definitely feels like the primary focus is the food and drink and very little attention had been given to the accomodation side of the pub. Unless we missed something, there is nowhere to sit downstairs unless you are sat for food or wanted to sit outside which, in early April, is not for the feint hearted. Getting to the room, the landing carpet looked filthy and there was a chair and desk at the top of the stairs which looked like someone's abandoned work area. The room (Kings Tor) was clean(ish) but the decor was dated and in need of a refresh. As an example, the curtains seemed to have been rescued from somewhere else and put up as an afterthought. The room had poor lighting (bedside light flickered) and the main light was pretty useless. There was an odd smell when we arrived and the room was cold (the window had been left open) and didn't feel too welcoming. We were above where the food is cooked and eaten, so you are above everyone downstairs in the pub. I am guessing that there is no sound proofing in place, as we could hear what people were talking about below us. The bed and bedding had seen better days and the spare pillows lacked any pillow cases/covers. In terms of the bathroom, the shower was very good but towels (three between two people) were pretty small and ineffective. There was one cupboard but clothes we put in there felt damp when we took them out after only a day being in there. We've stayed in a fair number of pubs, at a comparable price, over the years and accommodation wise, we wouldn't recommend staying here to any of our friends.

"Beautiful location and views"

7.0

Staff were very friendly, very helpful. Food in pub was excellent, would highly recommend eating there. Best steak ever. Frank certainly knows how to cook it on the ox grill. Watch from the chefs table.

Room was very tired. No cups, spoons or enough milk for tea/coffee. Had to ask for them. Only 2 towels provided which were very small bath towels, no hand towels, no shower mat for floor after shower. One bedside lamp very bright couldn't turn it down as just flashed. Only one pillow per person. One spare in wardrobe but no pillow case. Duvet cover had a small stain (looked like blood) on it. Have stayed here previously and by chance the same room about 4 or 5 years ago but the Bathroom has a door frame around a locked door which is very rough untreated wood. Needs sanding down to avoid accidental splinters. This has not changed since the last time. Curtains in bedroom and bathroom really need changing, old fashioned and barely on the tracks.
