Booked this room way in advance to go tour Lees McRae University the next day. Hurricane Helene came and we couldn't go tour the college because of the damage it caused to Banner Elk. Asked for a refund because of state of emergency and was denied any refund just because we couldn't get there.

Fixtures are very old. Toilets are old 5 gallon tanks. Sink and tub drains were clogged and wouldn’t drain. Not worth $130/night. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was good. Check in lady was aloof and vaguely interested in checking us in, being involved in a side discussion with another lady sitting in the reception area.

The room was not livable. Water from the sink poured directly onto the floor because the P-trap was missing. All the staff would say is “take it up with Travelocity”. The staff and management at this hotel cannot even spell customer service. If you plan on booking a room here, you have been warned.

This property fraudulently offers rooms for booking that are livable. Then offers no remedy except to take it up with the 3rd party booking agent. These people (staff and management) can’t even spell “customer service “.

"Can't recommend for many reasons, stay here only if you have to"

4.0

I want to try to say some nice things about this hotel but its hard because there’s so much that is just not good for travelers. The rooms are spacious and the beds are reasonably comfortable. The bathroom is bright and there are enough furnishings that you can unpack clothes into the dressers and there’s a large desktop to do work if you need to (which I did) and there is a fridge and microwave in the room. Now the sad truth. This used to be a Holiday Inn many years ago and it was probably great then but that was a long time ago. It appears the hotel was most recently renovated five years ago and it is in serious decline now. The staff on the day shift were not friendly or particularly accommodating. I had to stay here for two weeks right after Hurricane Helene and its understanding how the area would be severely affected and you could give many hotels and restaurants a bit of a pass if some things didn’t go okay but this hotel has serious problems that lead to me recommending to avoid it unless you absolutely have to. Cleanliness is a serious issue. There is only one housekeeper on duty and they do not do daily housekeeping, in fact they will only do housekeeping if you ask for it. I knew this and tried to hold off asking until Day 10 of my stay. They told me they couldn’t do it that day but would do it the next day. I waited all day and they didn’t do my room over. Finally I got to move to a different hotel and didn’t need the housekeeping. When I checked in the room was somewhat clean but still dirty in the corners and the bathrooms had hair that was not mine on the floor. The carpets are pretty grim, bare and look like they don’t get vacuumed often even though I see and hear the housekeeper (singular) moving the vacuum around. All of the rooms are exterior entry so you open to the outside in every room. The problem is that the weatherstripping on the doors has worn away and lets in all the outside air. For three of the 13 nights I stayed that included thick marijuana smoke. But it also means cold air comes in the room at a pretty strong clip and you have to run the heater to make up for it. But the heater/air unit is very hard to control the temperature. It goes from too hot to too cold and its not easy to have a consistent temperature especially at night. Very unsettled sleep ensues. While the bed is comfy, the desk chair and accent chair are old, cheap, worn and don’t work well at all. There are lots of outlets but some don’t work necessitating the use of a power strip if you have a lot to plug in like I do. The sink area is adequate and there is a closet area (no door) that will hold hanging clothes. The ironing board and iron both worked very well for the two times I needed them. (I was actually surprised it worked). The microwave worked but took a long time to heat water and the fridge did work but made a loud clicking noise all the time. At night it made it hard to concentrate to get to sleep. The shower room/toilet was bright and the shower had a strong flow and almost always had plenty of hot water. There was one 12 hour period on day five or six where it was only lukewarm. The toilet was a real problem. It flushed and had plenty of water but it didn’t empty the bowl out every time. Often I had to flush 2-3 times to get it to clear. The shower curtain was a single sheet of plastic and often allowed a lot of shower water to get on the floor and that water didn’t always easily dry out. And again with no housekeeping, you have to manage your towels carefully or just go to the front desk in person to get them. After the day shift, there is only the desk clerk so if you call to ask for something, there’s nobody to deliver it. I won’t complain about the internet. It worked almost all the time and you can excuse any outages because this area just went through a terrible ordeal and having internet outages are expected. There is a free breakfast and if its just one night, you can excuse its shortcomings. They do have two bins of hot scrambled eggs (probably from a mix) along with one bin of sausage links. There is a waffle maker (which works fine) but they provide you with the absolute barest of plates and plastic wear which are so weak you can’t actually cut the waffles when they are done. You have to eat them with your hand which with syrup can make it a mess. There’s also some breakfast breads with very cheap pastries, cereals, yogurt (only peach and raspberry). There’s coffee and tea but never any fruit juice despite there being a juice machine. It has apparently been out for many, many months. But they don’t have any juice bottles or any other replacements. The hallways and stairs are absolutely filthy. Everywhere you walk there are the stains of past years that have never been cleaned. There is a pool but it is never clean and I think they keep it closed pretty much all the time. And finally the characters that are hanging around are often pretty seedy. I saw the police in the parking lot several times and the hotel has a very robust security camera system with many cameras pointing to the halls and common areas. That’s a sign that often times guests and visitors are sketchy. There are signs on the front door warning that the bathrooms are only for paid guests and there’s no loitering allowed. You would never need that kind of sign on a decent hotel. My bottom line is that you should probably only stay here if you absolutely have to, like I did. It’s clear the owners do not care about putting any investment in the property and are only here to take whatever profits they can from what probably in its hey day was a pretty nice place. I wish it still was.
