"The Perfect Pavement Palace delivers on its promises."

9.0

The Pavement palace is perfect from my perspective - it is located so centrally in Hay (which is so peaceful at night) and it has been converted with such insight and taste. Every need was met despite the kitchen being compact and the provision of ground coffee an absolute blessing. Everything is provided so you just need to bring yourselves. And to have a bath to luxuriate in, is a rare find in a guest house these days. The king size bed is extremely comfortable, and the furnishings plentiful should you be staying longer. The lounge is spacious and quaintly looks out onto the vendors’ properties as if you were in a Georgian drama. The deli opposite is perfect for lunch and tea and all the other shops start literally on the doorstep. The wood burner was all set up for use but we didn’t need it this time as the heating control is so easy to use but I remember using it during our winter visit and it was very effective and from memory, you leave the cleaning to the host. Finally James offers very swift turnarounds which again is rare these days with a 14:00 checkin and 11:00 departure. I was a troublesome customer this time leaving stuff behind but James is the most affable host ever and so prompt in answering messages.

I really have to be supercritical to answer this question because I think the Pavement Palace is one of the most perfect places I’ve stayed (and I have stayed in many places across the World) but the latch on the bedroom door needs fixing so that it could shut and I think the “sofa bed” in the lounge which is flat on the floor albeit double would only really suit a younger couple or children flexible enough to get up and down BUT I only asked if we could bring my sister-in-law at the last minute so I was just grateful that James was so flexible in setting it up for us.

"Well-equipped, attractive, central location"

10.0

We arrived to find one of two parking spots that allowed us to park outside the property from late Saturday afternoon to early Monday morning. Two The Pavement is situated just off the High Street, next to the Victorian town clock, and convenient for all attractions in this attractive small town. The property is located above and behind a small antique shop. The entrance is down a short alley. You enter into a good quality kitchen that is compact and well-equipped; the bathroom adjoins. Upstairs are two large rooms: the bedroom (with very large bed) and a double-windowed living room that overlooks the street. The property is decorated in a pared-back style somewhere between Welsh country chic and Shaker. The wood-burning stove was most welcome on a wet and chill late September day.

We really liked the property but were not so successful with food in one of the local pubs. You should really trying making a simple meal or two in your 'own' kitchen or getting a take-out curry down the High Street. The Castle has been beautifully restored since we last visited and we had an excellent lunch there.

"A lovely, comfortable apartment right in the middle of town"

9.0

A fantastic small apartment right in the middle of Hay. Lovely large comfy bed, comfortable sitting room.

It was quite a hike to get into the bath/shower. Fine for us, but anyone much older might have had difficulty getting in.

"A characterful bolt hole in the perfect location in Hay."

9.0

Well equipped kitchen, with little extras that make all the difference like cooking oils/tea coffee/quality hand soap etc. Quirky spacious and befits Hay perfectly.

There wasn’t much we didn’t like, being really picky the dining chairs and stools aren’t very comfortable.
